Re: Towing Small Horse Trailer

SC', your limiting factor isn't your engine for hauling one horse in a lightweight trailer...it's the fact that you don't have the factory towing option and therefore, your towing weight limit is very, very low. You will be hard-pressed to stay within the manufacturer's limit with most trailers available on the market. You may be able to do it with a one-horse Brenderup...if you can find one since they are no longer imported to the US. (You don't need the brake controller for a Euro trailer, BTW...they all use inertial brakes which are required "over there". Electric brakes are not permitted in the EU and many other places for horse trailers)

If you had factory towing, you'd have a 6200 lb limit and have more choices.

Re: Towing Small Horse Trailer

I got a more accurate weight for my mare. She is about 1150lbs. I have not yet bought a trailer because I am looking for my best options. With a tow package on my GC it gives me a 5000lbs tow capacity. The trailers I have been looking at have been anywhere between 1800-2600lbs. I found that Featherlite makes an 1800lb "9450 trailer" that can be towed by an SUV and is similar to the looks of a European trailer. However, they are hard to find. I need a 7'6" tall trailer because of her height (a warmblood trailer).

If I can't find a euro styled trailer, I am wondering if I can be safe if I give myself at least a 20% safety margin.

Re: Towing Small Horse Trailer

You said your GC does not have the factory tow package, correct?

If so, your official limit is 3500lb. Bolting on a hitch doesn't change that limit.

Re: Towing Small Horse Trailer

I spoke with someone from Mopar. They said if I put on a tow package it would increase my tow capacity to 5000lb. They looked up my vin number and everything?

I'd get that in writing.

The Mopar web page for the hitch says "Check Owner`s Manual for hitch type, load capacity and heavy-duty equipment required. Do not exceed rated tow capacity of vehicle stated in Owner`s Manual. May require other items not supplied by Mopar."

Re: Towing Small Horse Trailer

I think the factory tow package has a larger radiator and possibly an external transmission cooler. Not positive though, that may also have an impact on the vehicles towing capacity from a reliability standpoint.

There are a bunch of things that are addressed with Factory Tow, depending on the trim level and engine choice. In general, cooling, electrical, braking and suspension are factors that are involved and those are not necessarily "easy" to change/optimize with an aftermarket tow setup, even if it's the OEM hitch. That's why the capacities are reduced greatly when Factory Tow was not provisioned, um...at the factory.

Re: Towing Small Horse Trailer

Factory tow, at least on a '14, includes a larger radiator, significantly more powerful fan (with an attached controller instead of the two-speed relay system), and a larger alternator - in part to deal with the higher fan current (60A vs 25A).

Re: Towing Small Horse Trailer

SC, not trying to discourage you..

But my daughter does the horse thing, and I've seen a lot of rigs hauling ponies that are trouble waiting to happen..

She was looking for a lightweight trailer to haul around with her fiancee's Tacoma, but then stumbled into a mint* 12-year-old Denali XL.. she HATES to drive that barge, but it does pull a decent trailer and two ponies (and carries a few riders to boot)..

...tom

*by mint, I mean the original brake rotors weren't even rusty..
