Towed the Supra for the first time today with the Jeep, it did surprisingly well!

Re: Towing thread

I have a 2014 Overland Hemi 2wd and tow a 2007 23' Caravelle boat. The boat and trailer total weight is approximately 6000 lbs. The Jeep tows great. The boat has surge brakes that help out when bringing all that weight to a stop.

Re: Towing thread

2014 JGC Overland with 5.7 Hemi and RWD.

Class 4 hitch, uhaul tow hitch.

Didn't even know about a "weight distribution hitch" and am not sure I need one??? Truck pulls great up hill and down hill, trans and oil temps stay fairly normal and I stay below 65mph (usually 55 or 60mph) to keep from swaying. Stock the car weighs in about 3100 lbs. It's stripped and has a roll bar so I'm guessing it's closer to 2900 lbs.

Re: Towing thread

imissed', you can't use a WDH with an inertial/surge brake equipped trailer like that UHaul.

Re: Towing thread

The 2014 owners manual says the maximum frontal area for towing is 55 sqft. There are very few travel trailers that are that small. The typical travel trailer has about 64 sqft frontal area. Reviewing this thread, I see several examples of trailers with more than 55 sqft frontal areas. I am looking at getting a new trailer but kind of squeamish about the new 55 sqft frontal area limit. I wish they did the specification right and put in speed to match frontal area. What do you all think?

EDIT: Expanding on my point about speed: The drag of 64 sqft at 70 mph is about the same as 55 sqft at 75 mph. Drag is proportional to the square of the speed. Thus, if Jeep is specifying a maximum frontal area assuming a speed of 80 mph, then 64 sqft is not a problem at even 73 mph. (of course, consider head wind as an increase in your speed.)

Re: Towing thread

mtn', I wonder if the shape/slope of said frontal exposure counts. Many new trailer designs are more aerodynamic these days because of both tow vehicle sensitivities and general common sense. That's been true in the horse trailer world...my older trailer is pretty flat up front, but all the more recent designs have v-noses to help with wind, etc.

Drag is proportional to the coefficient of drag at a constant speed and constant frontal area. Thus, a more aerodynamic shape helps. Which is another example why specifying one factor and ignoring the other two is ridiculous.

Re: Towing thread

My '12 owner's manual mentions 40 sq. ft. with the V6 which is OK because my TM 2720SL fits pretty much in the Jeep's slipstream. Tows nicely at 65 mph & typically 17-18 mpg.
