Re: Towing thread

^pop-ups are way under-rated hammer. great way to get into the wild with a bunch of gear, kids, etc, and still stay a tent screen away from the outdoors. let's see her.

haven't needed the side mirrors yet either even with a 20' boat, though would add them if we hauled longer mileage. fwiw, i'm getting aroudn 12 mpg with a 4,500 lb tow load, the hemi doesn't sweat it at all.

Re: Towing thread

Here's a picture...just brought the popup back from the shop. New tires and repacked wheel bearings, all set for our first trip on Wednesday.

Completely agree my friend!
Here's a pic of me and my tinnie in the middle of Moreton Bay (east coast of Oz) on the weekend. Funnily enough, I just bolted this new engine onto my well used little boat (wore the old 4-stroke out!), I sourced it 9 months old from Florida, and it came off a Boston whaler

I'm just guessing here, but the way I read the manual (p. 384), TSC is automatic and doesn't require you to push the Tow/Haul button. Don't know about Sport Mode, but it seems to imply that TSC is available at all times unless you push the ESC Partial Off button.

BTW, chiabianh, I see you tow three ATVs. That's a new hobby in my family...we love it. Recently posted a few pics in the High Alpine thread of our trip a few days ago over Cottonwood Pass. Hauling two ATVs up/down was effortless (5.7 Hemi).

Re: Towing thread

Came back from the first camping trip...a few observations:
  • The V6 pulled the 2000+ lb camper fine on the upgrades as long as I was above 2000 RPM. The transmission tends to upshift a bit early, though, which then forces me to downshift. I'm wondering if the TSB update I've read about would help this.
  • I didn't reset EVIC but the average MPG was around 17.5 towing on mostly highways.
  • It would be nice if the manual shift control allowed one to hold the current gear. Each time I went into manual mode I could only "shift" into the next lower gear, which I didn't always want to do.
  • I did have a few times when the pop-up did a bit of a dance behind the Jeep thanks to the wonderful road conditions on the Mass. Pike. The pop-up has surge brakes so when that happened the only thing I could do was just keep the Jeep steady and wait for the sway to subside. It wasn't bad but it was a bit noticeable. I did try to balance the load so I'm wondering if I need a bit more drop on the hitch to bring the pop-up closer to level.

They are a blast, aren't they? Looks like you have a couple of polaris sportsmans as well.. good choice. lol. The morning that pic was taken, we were on our way up to Argentine Pass up Georgetown. If you haven't taken this trail yet, it's definitely recommended, especially later on in the summer when the snow has mostly melted. Our 5.7 didn't break a sweat, either. Here's a closer pic of the load.. along with my brother and sister. haha

It is not the level but the load. When you say balance the load, do you mean so it balanced on the axle?
Load it a little more to the front, little more weight over the tow ball.
Had another look at your photo and it could be a little high, it will all help.
If you had electric brakes a quick squeeze of the hand control will pull it in line.

I put the heavier gear in front of the camper's axle and the lighter gear towards the back.

Unfortunately the camper has surge brakes so I don't have the ability to control them from inside the vehicle...

Re: Towing thread

new (to me) trailer, in addition to my flatbed, crap trailer for the fire wood. this one was nice... trailer tracking was nice, hemi made all the cool noises and trailer brakes with P3 where on boost 3 level ( putting the voltage as high as 10V+ and not locking, but defiantly doing the job)
total weight, well we can approximate: dual axle ( 6k each) 17' trailer, with heavy winch. 38 of 5/8" 4x8 driwall and 42 of 1/2" 4x8 ( assume with thickness variation but average of 72#/sheet as well as trunk full of other heavy crap ( i would say about 300#)... so trailer ~2k+5760 so I was all the way up there with the tow capacity!

all in all jeep so far performes just as advertised!
