Re: Towing thread

I am looking at possibly towing a 6,000 lb trailer with my HEMI limited. This will most likely end up at 7,000 lbs when loaded. Anybody tow anything close to this weight. I believe my GC is set up to tow 7,200 lbs. Even though the manual says it can do it on paper, i was wondering how it would handle it in real life. I had a 2003 Tundra that was supposedly capable of towing 7,000 lbs with the 4.7 L, but I can tell you from experience that was grossly over exagerated. Hoping I don't run into this problem with the Jeep.

Re: Towing thread

Similar question here. I appreciate the pics of what people tow but still wondering what the actual weight I can safely tow with my 2012 Overland 5.7 4-WD and class IV hitch?? I know it isn't 7400 but maybe 75% safely?? No source really says how much I can tow figuring the trailer weight plus the stuff I put in or on it. 75% of 7400 max would be about 5500 lbs total of trailer and load on trailer. I'm figuring I got about 300 lbs of people and/or equipment inside the vehicle. The pics are helpful but anyone know the total trailer weight they are actually towing in these or what my limit should be for a 800 mi. trip?? Thanks

The tow rating is what it can safely tow. Now the issue comes in when drivers don't do it safely. You need to slow down, stay out of the left lane, make sure your lights work, triple check the brakes (and brake controller) and tow. I once towed my old 1989 18' Fisher (heavy boat) with a 1988 Toyota 2wd pickup and while over 1000lbs more than the "rating" it worked fine...until it was time to load up. I will be towing my 98 Coleman Sunridge pop up with my '02 V8 WJ its right around 3k loaded. I plan on lifting the pup and putting matching wheels on it for a cool factor of 13.

Think Outside !- No Box Required.

Re: Towing thread

I'm well experienced with towing but still trying to figure out my limit for JGC as I've never towed with it and I know towing 7200 lbs of trailer and load would not be advisable for any distance. Think I'll self limit to around 5500 lbs total tow load. I towed about 5500 lbs with my 2006 Toyota Limited V8 (tri-pontoon on trailer) and it did fine. Had a similar tow limit.

Re: Towing thread

Here is the link to seven pages from the Airstream forums on towing with a WK2 as well as a WK:

Jeep Grand Cherokee and towing - Airstream Forums

I have a 25' AS that weighs in at 6300 pounds and will use my new '13 Overland Summit with the hemi, 6 speed and factory tow package to tow it. I have a Reese WD hitch, although I'm looking at the Anderson WD hitch to replace it.

If you read the thread, pay close attention to the posts from Andrew T, the owner of CAN-AM RV in Ontario Canada as he talks about the WK2 in positive terms as to towing capacity.

Re: Towing thread

I tow a trailer and 2010 Challenger SRT8 with my 2011JGCO. Trailer and car weigh about 6000#. We have no problems at all towing, just uses a lot of gas. We have factory class IV hitch, use stabilizer bars with the hitch and an electric brake controller.

I heard Andy Thomson (owner of CAN-AM RV) talk about Chrysler and Jeep tow vehicles at last spring's "Alumapalooza" event at the Airstream factory, in Jackson Center, Ohio. He had very positive things to say about the 2011-2012 WK2's abilities as an Airstream tow vehicle, and he mentioned that he was particularly interested in both the new 8-speed ZF transmission and the CRD we are now seeing in the MY14.

Andy sometimes goes to the Detroit Auto Show and I hope he does so this year and comes back with a detailed report on the new JGC.

I'm hoping to trade up from my 2002 JGC Overland to a 2014 Limited CRD this year, and I am expecting it to EASILY handle a 25 foot Airstream.

Re: Towing thread

Here's what I tow with mine. Couldn't be happier of how the Jeep tows the boat, and of course how nice they look together.
