Towing with your GC - Specific 2014 Capacity Question as well.

I recently upgraded from a 2010 VW Tiguan which only had a towing capacity of 2200lbs.

I know that the new V6 2014 Grand Cherokee has 6200 tow capacity, however I had a question regarding maximum tongue weight. Does anyone have any details on this? I've searched but cannot find details.

We are thinking about getting a small travel trailer, or pop-up camper for family trips.. I think for those it should handle it fine (under 5k fully loaded on travel trailer), under 3500 for a pop-up.

Anyone else towing a trailer w/ their Jeep's?

Tongue weight can be easily changed. If you're under the 6200, you're good to go.

Yeah I know I can adjust - I'm just trying to find all the specs so I have all the info is all. There are spec sheets that show all the details for 2012-13, but not 14.

It should be in the owners manual..which you can get on the Jeep Website

Re: Towing with your GC - Specific 2014 Capacity Question as well.

The maximum tongue weight should be 10% of the max towing capacity. It should also not exceed 10% of what you are towing.

Also remember, if you are really loading up the Jeep with people and cargo, that your tongue weight gets added to your gross vehicle weight .

That fact can be used as a reason (not just an excuse) to leave your mother in law behind.

Check out this Airstream trailer forum thread on towing with Jeep GC's. The word there is that the JGC can do fine with 23-30 foot Airstreams.

Re: Towing with your GC - Specific 2014 Capacity Question as well.

Page 461 in the O&M Manual supports the 10% mentioned above
Engine Model Frontal Area
Max. GTW
(Gross Trailer Wt.)
Max. Trailer Tongue
Wt. (See Note)
3.6L 4x2 55 sq ft (5.11 sq m) 6,200 lbs (2 812 kg) 620 lbs (281 kg)
3.6L 4x4 55 sq ft (5.11 sq m) 6,200 lbs (2 812 kg) 620 lbs (281 kg)
5.7L 4x2 55 sq ft (5.11 sq m) 7,400 lbs (3 357 kg) 740 lbs (336 kg)
5.7L 4x4 55 sq ft (5.11 sq m) 7,200 lbs (3 266 kg) 720 lbs (327 kg)

NOTE: The trailer tongue weight must be considered as
part of the combined weight of occupants and cargo, and
should never exceed the weight referenced on the Tire
and Loading Information placard. Refer to “Tire Safety
Information” in “Starting and Operating” for further
information. The addition of passengers and cargo may
require reducing trailer tongue load and Gross Trailer
Weight (GTW). Redistributing cargo (to the trailer) may
be necessary to avoid exceeding Rear Gross Axle Weight
Rating (GAWR) of 3,700 lbs (1 678 kg).

I believe the max tongue weight listed there is with a weight distributing hitch. Without which, MTW is 350lb. I'd have to check the FSM to be sure

Re: Towing with your GC - Specific 2014 Capacity Question as well.

As soon as it's available, I'll be ordering a 14 CRD to pull our camper. It's a 23' Spree, weighs in at about 6500lbs. We pull it with an 06 Dakota Quad cab with the 4.8 magnum now. It pulls it fine, but the engine really has to rev to get its power.

You'll be fine pulling a pop up or small trailer, unless it's heavier than any pop up I'm familiar with. The pentastar will have the power, and the new tranny will help out a lot with sending power when you need it.

Yeah I think I decided for something like an rPod or Jayco Hybrid. Will be under 5k GVWR for sure.

These campers sure have come a long way in the past 10 years.

No kidding! We almost got a Roo 21SS hybrid, but my wife was convinced it wouldn't cool down enough in the summer, living in FL. It would have, of course, but she couldn't get over it and we got the TT.
