Trade 2012 for 2014? Who is going this route?

I am wondering if there will be alot of folks trading in earlier models for the 2014 GC when they come out to avoid depreciation. With the improvements that the 2014 will have I am wondering if those of us with the 2011-2012 will see a big drop in value on our rides. I really like my GC and probably will not be trading but the new 8 speed tranny if it does offer MPG benefits that make it worth trading I may opt to trade. The new radio system is not a concern but I also haven't seen one yet.

So do you think the improvements will be enough to get you to trade?

Re: Trade 2012 for 2014? Who is going this route?

From my camp:
I will not be trading up to a 14. I have an 11, and plan to drive it 200k (at least) - and have a little bit of a different philosophy when buying cars. Once a purchase is made (in my eyes) it is your duty to pay for it in full and rock it 'till the wheels fall off.

Further, I have heard about the 8sp tranny - but from what I know about these types of upgrades - the MPG will be a little better, but not nearly enough to take a bath (....shower.... and a golden shower...) in a trade-in business case.

Some may tell me that the 8sp will get me into the 30MPG range with my hemi and the radio will perform favors like locking my doors at my house while at the office: I still don't/wouldn't care, and would not consider the trade in. Just my $0.02.

Re: Trade 2012 for 2014? Who is going this route?

I would certainly consider it. I have a 2012 Overland V6 and although I love it I could see myself getting into one of the more powerful engine offerings (V8 or Diesel). The 8spd, new huge nav screen and evic, LED's and improved MPG are plenty enough reason for me to wanna upgrade :-) I dont think values will depreciate significantly when the 2014's are released. To most people these differences arent a huge deal where as to us enthusiasts they are huge.

Re: Trade 2012 for 2014? Who is going this route?

Whether I lose money during trade-in or lose it on a sale 10-12 years down the road, it is the same to me. I think I will lose more during trade-in. 10-12 years down the road, the price difference will not be too much (of course, a 2014 will be expensive compared to a 2012 model car, but that does not mean the 2012 has lost its value). Also, the mpg difference must be significantly higher to make a big impact on the pre-2014's. I think the 2014's might be around 18/25 (city/highway). Not a fan of LED DRLs. I think they look good only on the Audis. Also, if they have a auto stop-start feature, expect starters and batteries as maintenance items.

The way I look (and calculate) at it, for example, is how much will my 2012 Limited sell for in 2022? How much will a 2014 Limited sell for in 2024? What's the price difference between these two sales? What's the amount did I lose during trade-in? Which price difference is smaller? Is the loss during trade-in covered by sale in 2024? Of course, don't forget the opportunity cost on the $$ you lost during trade-in.

Having said all this, I am keeping my 2012.

following the release of information on the MY14 closely. Might consider going from my MY11 Overland w/ Hemi to an SRT8.

We'll be trading up to 2014 Diesel when they come out from an Overland V6. To many goodies to pass up that would make the vehicle perfect... Just hope the trade in hit isn't to bad. This will be the first time I've traded a vehicle so early, we usually go around 7+ years.

Re: Trade 2012 for 2014? Who is going this route?

I would just assume pay for this one hang onto it for a while and then go for a 2018

I am sure the 2018 would probably carry over that drivetrain and all of the other good stuff that the 2014 to 2016 Vintage would have.

Life is short so if you want to get the eight speed when it comes out don't deprive yourself just know it has a cost, and who knows I am not sure how much of an improvement you will get on mileage because there are a few other cars out there using a variation of that tranny and they are not winning awards for High Gas Mileage. They are however fun drive, if they can bring that to the Grand Cherokee that will be the real factor in wanting to trade up.

Re: Trade 2012 for 2014? Who is going this route?

Honestly I may be trading up from my ’11 Overland to a ’14 SRT. All depending on what occurs between now and 1 year from now. With used ‘12’s dipping into the high 40’s I may also look for a nice used one here in a year. I try to keep my cars for 4/5 years before changing but I feel the SRT is something I want to get into. While not the only car on my list of cars to get the SRT is the front runner by a long way. But if I go new I am going to by pass any of the local dealers and deal with Pat.

I just got rid of my other wife’s Charger SRT for a more fuel efficient car ’13 Jetta TDi, and miss the oomph of what a large V8 can give. Also missing scaring little children, ladies, and going through tunnels with an exhaust.
