I can't imagine the fuel economy savings will ever overtake the financial hit from the trade in. Especially when you consider the additional costs associated with the diesel.

Absolutely, I'd probably need to drive 400k miles probably to break even on the deal.

Wanted the diesel. Honest salesman told me that I would be waiting a while for them.

The V8 doesn't have quite the torque peak for towing, but with the very aggressive low gear in the 8 speed, it can haul a lot of freight, and unlike the diesel at higher freeway speeds, it can still haul *ss.

Not everyone buys the diesel for just the fuel economy, however...if it had been available when I was buying, I would have grabbed it "just because" I like the idea of a diesel power plant, although the better fuel economy while still having full towing capacity would have certainly been a factor, too.

Same here.. I'm not looking to buy a diesel to save money. I *KNOW* it's going to cost me more, both in what I will lose on the trade and the additional cost of the diesel powerplant.

I just want it to make towing my RV more comfortable/easy on the engine.

... And the get up and go is more important to me. I'm sort of in denial the get up and go isn't close to the hemi even though I know it's the truth. Maybe I just need to drive a diesel to get it out of my system.

Re: Trade In - 14 JCG 6-Cyl for Diesel?

I'm got a quote for 31-32k on my a Grand Cherokee (same as the op). See my thread I started in the diesel forum Whats a good price for the Ecodiesel right now

I'm also extremely happy with my Jeep but it would be nice to trade in for a diesel.

My diesel pulls strong with a full load of people and gear to its 118mph speed limiter....

Re: Trade In - 14 JCG 6-Cyl for Diesel?

The diesel has more than enough get up and go. Surprised me the first time I smoked the tires. As far as towing, I finally got a chance to tow last week, and I was surprised. With my old JGC V8, I knew I was pulling something. With the diesel, I had to keep looking back to see that I was still towing, as I could not even tell I was pulling something with all that torque. Get the diesel, you will not regret it.

That's good to hear, Shannon. My next one will definitely be an "oil burner".

I definitely wasn't saying the diesel doesn't have get up and go - (with out turning this into a flame war or argument) for comparison purposes I just remember reading the 0 - 60 times were similar to the v6 and about a second slower than the hemi. No slouch by any means.
