Re: Trade in dilemma

Talk to another dealer - they can repair it for a lot 'cheaper' than you can. My 2003 Liberty had 123,000 miles on it with the original tires. I asked whether I should replace the tires before trading it in and was told that tires will cost them a lot less than they would cost me.

Re: Trade in dilemma

Anyone who just looks at a P0420 and says both catalytic converter and O2 sensor (rear ?) has probably not read the service manual. If the Pathfinder has a dual catalyst system (most V engines do) first thing I would do is to switch the rear sensors and see if the code follows the sensor or stays the same (actually could check the actual reading on my cell phone but not everyone has Torque (plug)).

If the code changes (follows the sensor) then change it. If it stays on the same side then the CC is suspect but in my experience it is rarely both.

Re: Trade in dilemma

I had a 15 year old Chevy that was basically un-inspectable in my state without putting more money into it than it was worth. I took it to the junkyard and sold it for scrap, because that was what it was. I suppose I could have tried to con some dealer or private buyer, but I just don't roll that way. I'm a firm believer in caveat emptor, but I also believe what goes around, comes around. Karma can bite you in the butt sometimes.

Re: Trade in dilemma

I honestly don't know, how expensive the repairs are. If you like to sell it private, you could offer it as an project car. Some small shops do also cheap repairs. Look around.
When I bought my used Plymouth Caravan 1997, the first 2 weeks I had to run to the shop because of some codes. The shop was the shop of the original owner..... When I was waiting, the foreman talked a couple of times to customers on the phone: "...there is a code showing up but you said you like to sell/trade it. Is that right? bla bla bla ... Yeah we can delete that for $50 no problem sir..." And there I was sitting..... :-/

But I learned....
Go to a Jeep/Chrysler/Dodge dealer in you area other than the dealer you got the offer. Take a business card from the dealer. Go back if you like. Talk again with the sales person and tell them the other dealer offered you $xxxx$ 20 minutes ago for your trade in....

I do it the same way. What will happen? If they really like to sell they will match or top a bit that "offer" and you get your deal. I got a business card from a dealer in our town. Drove over to the dealer I liked better and asked how much they like to give me for our Grand Suzuki 2007 with 150,000 km on it. Answer: " I don't like it but if I have to take it I give you $7,500 for it..." My answer...: "Mhmmm... this guy would give me $9,400 if I sign today...." And gave him the business card from the other dealers sales person. The sales guy goes back and the manager comes back with him. "If you sign today for a car I will top that to $9,500..." I cried a bit more when I saw the price for the GC because it was the old model 2013 and I liked the 2014 better... So I got the 2014 Laredo with some upgrades/NAVI/Winter package and so on for the same price as the 2013 base Laredo... ($39,500 CAD) because that was what they had on 2014 models. All the same Laredos only different colors... Signed the papers and a day later I was back again and complaint that they did not give me the $2,000 cash back, handed over a print out from the Jeep internet side.... The manager got a bit angry .... because he gave me $2,100 already more for my trade-in and over $4,000 on discount on the new car.... I left with another $1,500 as cash back....

If sales people like/must sell ... they can't see grown man crying! ;-p

So my advice... Cry baby - cry......

And there we go again.....
Like little kids... *tze tze tze

I know where you are coming from. And I understand it. But I disagree with your last couple of letters in your comment!

* Another thing I do with my older cars - I give them away for $0 to friends if I know they need a car and don't have the money to buy one, tell them what is wrong and they buy the parts and fix it on there own. My wife is from the Philippines and I am originally from Germany so we always know some friends there are new to Canada and in need of a ride. Most of the time my cars a gone in no time.....

Re: Trade in dilemma

In addition to trading it or selling it, you also have the option of donating it to benefit a charity of your choice if you itemize your taxes. Sometimes that is better financially for something with an expensive repair looming because the ACV for the donation may be the better deal.

What you are talking about isn't a large step from outright theft by deception. We are also talking about a 2002 Pathfinder.

The type of person who buys 2002 Pathfinder is most likely the type of person for whom those repairs are a huge deal financially.

It's one thing to not know what's wrong, or sell a car with a known problem - but another to purposely hide a known real problem. Someone who does that has clear character flaws.

Re: Trade in dilemma

I think I'd go to the dealer with a number in mind for the car, say $500. Tell them this is what you are willing to settle for, even with the light on. If they say no, let them know you will not (can not) buy a Jeep until that car is gone. If they don't want to sell a Jeep that day, so be it, put your car on Craigslist or something and wait for the $500 (or whatever your number is).

As a salesman/manager, I would understand that I am losing a customer if I can't find $500 to swing ya. And that you will probably find someone willing to give you that, and you will take that money to another dealership.

If they offer you the $500, they have a sale THAT DAY. I think I would enforce that you are willing to sign right that moment. Just do your homework on finance, invoice, etc. before you walk in.

Good luck!
