Trade in dilemma

So I was all ready to pull the trigger on a GC this weekend, when my Service Engine Soon light came on in my current car. I took it to get diagnosed and it needs about $1400 in repairs. I was hoping to get around 2500 for the car in a trade in. Has anyone else ever been in this situation just before you were going to buy? Did you get the car fixed and try and raise the amount on the trade in, or did you just take the loss in trade in value and not get it fixed?

Re: Trade in dilemma

$1400 in repairs just for a check engine light? Why not give us more details? What type of car is it and what was the code that it was throwing? A lot of times its a cheap and easy fix when a CEL is thrown.

Re: Trade in dilemma

We once brought in my wife's 2003 Grand Caravan in for some, what we thought was minor work, turned out it needed $1500 in repairs, which was about what the vehicle was worth. Talked to the sales guy about what he would give me in current condition and with repairs. He said 0 (zero) in current condition and $ 1500 with the repairs done.

It was a tough pill to swallow, but we got the repairs done and drove it for a few more years. Cleaned 'er up good, and I mean I spent days, and days cleaning it. Steam cleaning the carpets, armor all'in the crap out of it, it looked pretty good when I had it done,,,you name it, I did it. Then put 'er up for sale privately and got $ 3,000 for it.

When I sold my WK to buy the WK2, I did the same. Even pulled the seats to get the carpets out and pressure washed the carpet. Cleaned her up good. Buddy guy who bought it said it was the cleanest one he'd seen.

Re: Trade in dilemma

If you were only hoping for $2500 as a trade, the car is worth nothing to the dealer. Any figures they give you as a trade will be offset by the discount they would give you on the new vehicle. I would see what you can get for the vehicle privately, without any repairs, as is. It is unlikely you would recover the $1400.

It's a 2002 pathfinder. Needs a new catalytic converter and oxygen sensor. Code is P0420.

In regards to the value being off set by the quote from the dealer; I already have a quote from the dealer not including the trade in. I plan to take the pathfinder to Carmax to get a quote from them and see if the dealer can match, or if they couldn't sell the car to Carmax.

Right, sell it on Craigslist and get what ever you can for it.

Take it to autozone and have them turn that light off then head straight to the dealer do not stop then make your purchase in the new vehicle. Caveat emptor for the next buyer or the dealer.

Good one.

P0420 takes a while to appear, maybe 50 miles.

So that gives you plenty of time to get rid of the code, then RUN to the dealer. Not saying that *I* would do it, but seriously, that's hilarious.

I would go this type of route (go to Carmax and then go to dealership to compare - do not fix). Anything that is 10yrs or older never sees the dealer's lot - it goes to auction. They most likely won't even inspect it. I traded in my BMW which was on its 11th year when I bought my wk2 and they didn't even open the doors. They just looked up book value and went from there.

Then you shouldn't complain about problems with your Jeep.

After all, Caveat Emptor, works both ways.

But screw the next guy is OK as long as you are not the next guy.

Not saying I'd do it either but......I think "pos" is a bit harsh. I reserve that term for murderers and rapists usually.

Side note-

Rarely are dealerships 100% honest, at least in my experience. They do similar to customers daily.

Again, not saying I'd do it....
