Re: Trade-In: "Kelly Blue Book" vs. "Black Book"

^^^ Yep....I had someone send me a fake cashier's check from CA for a MacBook Pro I had on eBay. It was from a small credit union....so I called before shipping out...fake. Faxed it to bank who forwarded it to FBI. I then I contacted everyone the buyer had recently bought from to warn them (took me about 2 hours....about 30 sellers)....saved some other people some heartache since one guy was literally on his way out the door to ship the bogus buyer stereo equipment when he got my email...he was happy.

So verifying the cashier's check is always a very good idea. I didn't for this one since it was drawn that morning from a major national bank, have the guy's business card (works for a large national company), and took the 2005 to his house did the transaction inside his house (there were family photos on the wall), then he drove me back to my place. But you're right, I probably should have called the bank to verify...

Re: Trade-In: "Kelly Blue Book" vs. "Black Book"

^^^ I had to talk my buyer out of cash....he said he keeps cash in safe at home because of hurricanes/economy/etc. just in case. $100's still banded from the bank. So he had to go to his bank and get a cashier's check that morning instead....just more secure in my mind. I was gonna deposit it anyway that way I don't get a flag for over $10K cash for no reason.

Re: Trade-In: "Kelly Blue Book" vs. "Black Book"

Great discussion. I always do a sales agreement too and check validity of cashiers check. Last car I sold was only like $4k so I took cash. Agree however it is better to take a check for amounts over $10k, I've never deposited that much cash. I've come to a good trade value with the dealer I'm negotiating with so I've decided not to sell my Volvo myself, which is the first time I've ever traded (well my car). Given the timing challenge between when i sell it and when they locate my WK2 I don't want to fool with that stress for less than $2k net sales tax and I think I've got it within that margin.

Re: Trade-In: "Kelly Blue Book" vs. "Black Book"

I don't know about everyone else, but i had a dealer offer me a little over 16K for my 2007 4.7 Laredo with 71K miles on it. They met blue book exactly.

Take the easily 4 or 5K worth of mods off it and sell it, and i'll be looking at almost 20.

Shop around, get some quotes, and use them as a bargaining chip.

That's too bad, my recent experience, also with affiliate pricing on the new Jeep (i.e no haggle) is that the ACV on the trade from five dealers ranged from $17,000 to $24,000 (the largest dealers offered the least). With the affiliate program, I usually shop the trade in value, advertise the vehicle for private sale with what the dealer offered for trade plus say $500 more. For reference, my KBB trade in value for good shape was ~$25000.

If you don't have the affiliate pricing, negotiating the new car price and ACV separately gives a bit more flexibility (although you will be disappointed with how much the trade is worth to the dealer). Sometimes your time is worth more than the trouble, but the best way to to optimize the deal is to compete dealers, although they usually hate it when you do that.

I get more telemarketers and scams from cars.com and autotrader than its worth sometime. Craigs list not so much.
