Trail striping protection

I am loving my Overland. I have been enthusiastically exploring the nearby trails (in the Woodland Park area, for any locals), and generally having a blast.

Some trails are very narrow, however, and have branches, bushes, etc. sticking out into the trail. I have managed to avoid any serious damage but have definitely collected a few scratches in the clearcoat on the doors and fenders. They will certainly polish out, but it is distressing nonetheless. I'm sure at some point I will be not paying attention and end up with a real scratch.

Does anyone make some sort of product (e.g. Magnetic covers or something) to protect the paint when off-roading, or must I just learn to live with it?

Re: Trail striping protection

When I used to autocross (obviously not in a Jeep...) I would use blue 3M painters tape on the front bumper lip, around the wheel wells, etc, any where I was worried about getting stone chips or rubber buildup.

You can buy huge sheets or rolls of vinyl magnets that you could try. The same stuff that that they make signs out of that can temporarily be stuck to the side of vehicles. Just google 'vinyl magnet sheets'.

Re: Trail striping protection

So what do other people do about this, just live with it?

In retrospect, I should not have gotten a black one.

Found a real scratch on the lower passenger door today. Probably from when I slipped sideways on a snowy section into a nasty little bush. Got out and looked a few miles later but there was too much mud to see anything. Can't think of what else might've caused it. I assume it will polish out as well, just might take a little more effort.

Re: Trail striping protection

When the scratches and dings are YOURS, gained by a fun ride through the woods - they don't hurt so bad.

No advice, except maybe find wider trails.

Re: Trail striping protection

I found a few places online, including http://www.offroadmagnetics.com/

But be prepared to pay, most of the premade ones I have seen are well over $500. Of course thats cheaper than having your vehicle repainted.

Re: Trail striping protection

it's a jeep, it is supposed to be scratched up and muddy.

I have a big scratch down the passenger side, from headlight to taillight, from an encounter with a tree on a trail designed for an ATV. It was fun though.

Re: Trail striping protection

Or you can use this: http://www.tracwrap.com/install-paint-protection-film

I've used it several times on other cars. I found some left over on one of the rolls I had and did the sides of the WK2 before I went to some trails around here. When we were on the trails I could hear the branches screaming in joy and pleasure as they left scratches and lines all down both sides of the truck. After just one day of "exploring", looked like I went through a car wash wheel made of wire brushes. When I got home, I peeled the film off, rinsed, and washed the truck, and not a single scratch anywhere on the paint!
