transfer case fluid change wk2
I have a 5.7L with the two speed transfer case (no ESLD's).. I think it's a MP3023, iirc.. Changed the fluid at 31K, it was quite metallic looking but still red, smelled OK. I tend to change fluids early the first go around, so not recommending anything in particular... I would consider my use very hard on all fluids, especially the drivetrain. Anyway..
As for the change, I was surprised to see it took about 2.4Qts (although the bottles are hard to empty completely using a pump) and removed the same amount.. The car was level using a bubble level. The specs I saw online for one was 3.2 pints!
I was so sure it would be less than 2 qts that I only had 2, and needed to suppliment with redline D4! But as this unit is not made by Chrysler, I can't see why other ATF's can't be used - especially Redline, which meets the specs per Redline at least.. Anyway. Have 3 qts of fluid ready.
I also thought I remembered torque spec was 20ftlbs, but now read it's 13 for both, I think.. Seems to be close enough and fine.. Still not sure what the spec really is. I used a white thread sealer on both. Takes 8mm hex.
Not sure if this will help someone or if someone wants to comment on the official way to do it, I couldn't find a write-up by searching.. I really doubt I overfilled, as I've done this enough before. As with most fluids I change early, the look of it made me sure I didn't change it too soon.
