Re: turned off Forward Collision Avoidance today

Turned mine off also. Almost been run over from behind a number of times when it hit the brakes for a car in the right turn lane. Also gets real scary in icy roads.

Re: turned off Forward Collision Avoidance today

Hmmm, I had not considered icy roads. Good point.

I've yet to have it actively break. A few legit warnings and a few false warnings of someone pulling off the road.

Re: turned off Forward Collision Avoidance today

Icy roads -- good point. I hope the FCW and ABS are on speaking terms.

Have had very few false warnings, though most of them were situations that could have become accidents if driver wasn't paying attention. I'd say FCW was being a little over-cautious but not nannying.

Similarly, the ACC always likes to brake fairly hard when a vehicle intrudes between me and the target vehicle, even if a collision is not likely. My workaround for this is to press the Cancel button on the steering wheel momentarily, and then resume. This avoids the braking, and only takes a moment to complete.

Re: turned off Forward Collision Avoidance today

I drive pretty aggressive and I had to turn it off after it slammed on the brakes for cars turning off in front of me and me going around them, it's probably beneficial for highway driving but in the country it can be startling and kinda dangerous to have it mash on the brakes when you don't need to

Evidently I don't drive in a manner that makes it go off ?? Only time I have noticed it is when its doing it and it should not be.

Honestly, I also find the "BRAKE!!" notification flashing in the instrument panel distracting since I rarely look at that area unless I need information. I find I look down and try to figure out what its saying instead of paying attention to whats in front of me.

Like I said earlier I also ride motorcycles so I generally give room ...motorcycles don't stop like cars. Also because I ride I tend to be pretty observant, though we all have lapses.

This is the best feature on my WK2.

My wife scares me when she uses it.

I don't think this feature is for all drivers.

I believe this option is more for the engaged driver.

I try to be more aware of my driving when I turn it on.
If not it may do its own thing.

Just my experience.

Re: turned off Forward Collision Avoidance today

All 3 of the false-positives have been when people hesitate as they are leaving the lane I'm in. I got the Jeep (2015 5.7 Summit) in October so it's not frequent by any means. It did detect a metal box (about 6-ish inches square) that came out of some guy's pickup on I75, bounced across three lanes of traffic and wedged itself up under the engine. Was pretty impressed with the amount of brakes that it applied on its own. Normal cruise control (not ACC) was on. To echo what others have said: I'm happy to leave it on.

What is permanently off is Park Assist, but that rant is best saved for another thread.

Re: turned off Forward Collision Avoidance today

Ask your dealer to calibrate the sensor. It is possible that it is not aligned correctly. After that if you have still an issue you might want to change FAR to NEAR.

In my case the only time I've got false alarms is when going under overpass. This maybe happened a handful of times in 3 years of driving so I'm willing to live with it.

Re: turned off Forward Collision Avoidance today

Have some large tress in the middle road divider when making a curve on Pine Tree Drive in Miami Beach that has triggered the brake warning twice. It must have been the angle and the GC thought I was headed for the tree.

If I recall --- and maybe someone knows off the top of their head --- the "BRAKE" warning comes on when your foot is on the accelerator and there is an object in front that you may collide with. Dunno when or really if it goes off when your foot isn't on the accelerator.

Drove thru an ice storm 3 weeks ago.

Worked fine. The sensor was even partially obstructed by ice.

The only thing I had a problem with were the rain sensing wipers.
The wipers were doing their own thing

Re: turned off Forward Collision Avoidance today

As someone who has had trouble with the sensor, I understand that some are leery of false alarms. On the other hand, I strongly advise you to go to the dealership and ask them to re-align it and update the software. We do not know how it really happened, most likely during a snow event, but the sensor moved and would throw false alarms, brake all of a sudden with nobody ahead, cancel its function suddenly, etc.

It took the dealership about a week to diagnose it because it would not throw any codes but when they did, they fixed it by realigning it. They did a very solid job, no false alarms, and saved my butt twice. I would not turn it off.
