Hi, I just traded in my 2011 overland for the 2014 overland, and its been awesome. Very happy with everything so far, however I huge issue for me is sometimes I just want to charge my phone without doing anything else.

Everytime I plug my iPhone 5 into the usb port, it changes directly to my music on my phone, so not only does the screen change and new music play...I now have to hunt and peck to get it back to Radio, then click Nav to get it back to the map. Is there any way to avoid this? 99% of the time I just want to charge the phone without doing anything.

Sorry if this has been covered I saw 1 thread from 2012 that wasn't very helpful. Thanks!

Buy a 12V cigarette lighter plug adapter for your iPhone cable and plug it in to the outlet underneath the radio - no autoplay from the iPhone; plus you can shut the lid and hide the phone and cable.

Just make your phone not a music player in the UConnect system, that should fix it.

@Northland, I do have the cig lighter usb adapter plug from the 2011...just figured if the usb was an available option why not use it. But its not the end of the world if I go back to the 12v adapter.

@SnoFire, how do you go about making your phone "not a music" player in UConnect?

Thanks for your replies so far...

If you go into the phone area on the screen you can see what phones are linked and also if they are setup as Media players. Just make surges isnt in there and give it a shot.

Thanks for the replies, I did call UConnect support (surprisingly very helpful)...the engineer informed me that the usb port is meant to be a media port not solely charging, so no matter what we plug in there if its recognized as a compatible source it'll autoplay. Thats how the system was designed.

That said I can either use the backseat usb ports or the 12v cig lighter adapter.

Thanks again!

Most cars I've owned are also designed this way too.

If I want to just charge my Iphone 4s, I plug it in first, then start the car. No music plays when I do that. If I start the car, then plug in phone, it starts playing music right away. I leave my cable permanently plugged into the dash connector and just plug the phone into that.

I like the 12v charger in the center console with my phone in that nifty little top tray and using the cutaway on the right side for my charger cord. Minimizes my distractions and charges faster than the USB.

I use the USB charge port on the back of the console with a long USB cable and then rest my phone in front of the sdcard/USB/aux spot, and that works for me. But then again, I have both a USB drive and SD card plugged in, as my music takes up multiple ad cards with my most favorite on the USB drive, to reduce my swapping of cards.
