Under rear view mirror lighting?

The Touareg we just got rid of (you have no idea what a joyful day that was) had one really nice feature. under the rearview mirror there was a very dim light (red i think) that shined down on the console/ dash that created a nice ambience at night. has anyone installed something like this on their jeep and if so, what did they use?

Re: Under rear view mirror lighting?

+1 loved this in both VW and Audis, maybe replace one of the vanity bulbs with a micro spot but have not seen the right bulb.

There is! it's a green one and it's in the overhead. I noticed it last night.

Yup! There is a green light that shines down from the overhead console onto the center console where the transmission selector/cup holders are. Very sexy!

Re: Under rear view mirror lighting?

Bumping an old thread - Trying to install this in my WK and can't seem to get the mirror apart to install them in there. Does anyone know how to take it apart (not remove the mirror, actually separate the plastic) or have any pictures of this green light in the WK2?

Re: Under rear view mirror lighting?

Not sure if these are the pics you're after, but here is the source of the green glow:

The square in the center (above the hatch button and below the II Home Link button). Shown with interior lights ON.

With interior lights OFF. Appears blue in this picture but is actually green. Sitting in either front seat it is very hard to notice the light is on.

This is the reverse view (looking toward the interior cabin). The light is much more obvious.

I tried to take a picture to show the glow in the cabin, but I really can't notice the light on the console, largely because the cup holder lights are very bright, as is the climate control display. And if the radio is on it's even brighter in the cabin. So for me the light is all but lost unless I put my hand in the path of the beam, then I can notice a green glow.

Having said that, I'm not sure I'd want that light to be any brighter. I think whatever glow it adds is sufficient for me.

Re: Under rear view mirror lighting?

Awesome! Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

That's exactly the same color brightness I'm looking to do with mine. I'm guessing you can't see the light source while sitting in the driver's seat? Since the WK doesn't have a recession for a bulb, I was searching all over trying to find a place to put that same kinda light without being a visual distraction while sitting in any of the seats. Under the mirror was my first thought, but can't seem to get the stupid thing apart!

The source of the light is not obvious that's for sure. It's a little square, less than a 1/2" and from the driver's seat, or at least the way I'm sitting, I can only see the slightest hint of light coming from the square. It's only when I put my hand under do I realize there is something shining down.

Re: Under rear view mirror lighting?

Thanks for your help. I'm going to see what I can find for a piece of metal or something to seat the LEDs into and let the metal sit on top of the plastic. Drill a hole through the plastic and see if I can countersink it a little bit with the tip of the LED's sitting in the hole.

Just to clarify, your overhead light only comes on with the headlights/parking lights? I was going to tap into the accessory signal, but if it's with the headlights I can tap into the power for the garage door openers up there.

I'll have to check but that sounds right. I know they didn't come on when I had it in ACCESSORY or RUN mode, only when I actually started the engine.
