32-33psi, from factory the tires were jacked up to around 40.

I didn't think much of it before the first storm, but during that storm when I parked I noticed how much snow was packed on the center of the tires and nothing towards the edges, which is where the latitudes actually have most of the siping to deal with snow. So I dropped the pressures to what should be the normal setting and the tires have much more bite in snow.

Re: Unsure about snow performance

So I have about an inch of snow on the road, light dusting. Am I better off putting it in snow mode? Or is snow mode only for when you're trying to get through a lot of snow? I have to drive on the highway and not sure what is safer

Thanks Rotor.
I had lowered mine to 33 psi by guage but the EVIC shows 34-35 so I'll go a bit lower and see.

I would think that Auto is better for the highway. I'll only use Snow around town or off road. Having said that, Snow mode will function at any speed.

Re: Unsure about snow performance

I have an Overland with stock 20" and its great in snow (had 10 " here last week). I have had many other 4 wheel drive SUVs (Land Rover, Dodge, other Jeeps, Subaru, etc.) to comapre it to.

We know. Every time a snowflake falls in a 100 mile radius of NYC, we hear about it on the national news... it's quite pathetic.

I wonder how this would impact everyone's snow performance.
I had it done last week- right before a massive snow hit on Thursday. It didn't affect things in any way I can tell. If anything, it actually helped.

I always move it to snow mode. I read (on this forum I think) that snow mode calibrates the ESC for better handling of lane changes where you might lose traction on painted lines, etc.

I have played around with various snowy conditions (including mostly dry pavement and highway driving 70mph+) and I like snow mode the best when it is snowing. Just my opinion though.

I agree. I think it helps engage the ESC a little bit sooner (as described) which allows you to keep control of the vehicle. Before the ESC update I almost lost control during a lane change on a snow covered road (using the power of the hemi). The ESC kicked in almost too late. Now it seems to be spot on. I like the improvement.

I think I will try the ESC update.

I agree it is also not very fair to call Blizzard some heavy snow and wind as well, I am from Russia originally and we have different meanings of word Blizzard there We also don’t call it snow storm, it easer snow or heavy snow. However area you are mentioned is very densely populated, and that is adding complexity to the anything transportation related.

Same experience here in Bethesda/Potomac, Diesel. I was out around 4:30pm and it was a goatscrew because lots of people left early to avoid the rush and in the process they created a brand new one. Classic DC mayhem and hilarity due to snow, though admittedly this is coming down at a pretty good pace for this area (at least 2"+/hr in our area).

I took the kids to the store for some junk food and had a hard time finding anything to test the Jeep. I kept the wipers going and the front defroster on to stay ahead of the freezing wiper issue others have reported. Rear wiper may be a tad wimpy...I hit it when we got in the Jeep w/o manually clearing the wet snow back there and it bogged down at half-wipe. Had to give it an assist; worked fine after that. Also found that the FCW sensor is prone to getting covered in snow as reported in the EVIC. I keep my distance pretty well on my own in bad conditions so this is not a major issue and besides, what're you gonna do--snow tends to cover things.

Had no problems to speak of on the Fortera 20's. Stopping wasn't awesome but then again we had had hours of sleet and slop before the snow came so the surface was already a mess. Made the kids laugh with a couple of impromptu donuts, went up a few steep hills just to show we could. When we got to our street which is moderately steep, there was a guy in a little foreign import sedan turned sideways and struggling. I didn't have the heart (or the recklessness) to drive around him so we took the long way and it was just as well. I will try to get out again later this evening. We have a long private drive which is going to need multiple snowblower sessions I can tell. I'll reward myself with a little sortie afterward.
