Unused steering wheel buttons?

Have any of you guys and gals rigged the unused buttons on your steering wheel for anything?

On my 2014 JGC Limited I'm staring at the 3 blank buttons on the right side of the wheel, wondering how difficult it might be to put them to some sort of use...

Re: Unused steering wheel buttons?

Are they actually functional or just blanks? Our 2013 has two opens spots where the active cruise control buttons belong but they're just plastic spots.

Re: Unused steering wheel buttons?

Do remember that most "buttons" on the JGC are not traditional switches; rather, they are triggers for computer signals. That may limit what you want to do because there's no "dedicated" wires leading away from them other than to a circuit board.

Re: Unused steering wheel buttons?

*might* be able to put a micro switch behind it and use that to activate something....maybe?

Too many mods to list for each, so let's just say a lot was done over the years.

Re: Unused steering wheel buttons?

But getting wires back through the wheel given the fact that the wheel turns multiple times 360 end to end is a bigger challenge than installing a microswitch! The computer controls use rotating contacts which are unlikely to be available for other purposes.

True. I was just throwing something out. I know on the LXs they would add wireless paddle shifters. I don't recall the exact setup or if it woul work in this case.

As long as we're speculating, and presuming the buttons are sending a code that is simply disregarded (ie. hooked up but ignored) then I can imagine tapping the output line in the console, after the rotating contacts, and using a microcontroller coded to wait for the button identifier pulse train.

I wouldn't be surprised if they created it this way. Having different software/firmware "if/then" statements is less expensive than a bunch of variant circuit boards/steering assys that have different button counts.

Of course, I haven't cracked open my steering wheel and hooked up a logic analyzer or anything, so perhaps it's not that way at all.

I bet the wheel button module is a canbus device that sends commands over a pair of wires. The big knob and cluster of switches in the console to the rear of the shifter is like this; it only has three wires coming out of it.

Re: Unused steering wheel buttons?

I'm with MBD on this...the connections are likely only what is required to "participate in the network" and minimal in number. But, of course, I do not plan on disassembling my steering wheel to see for sure...
