I think they needed to do that with the V6 to increase the towing capacity.
I remeber years back when Chrysler changed the rear on one of their big sedans to increase gas mileage. The car was known as a comfortable boat hauler.
Then, without making a big announcement they changed the rear. Folks replaced their vehicles, only to find the tow capacity dropped from 3500 to 1000 pounds. The junk yards did a brisk business selling Chrysler differentials. I think this was in the late 60s or early 70s.
