He is one of the founders of JeepGarage and is very knowledgable in regards to jeeps and cars in general. I believe he answers at least 30- 45 posts a day.

Re: Upgrades to make the WK2 a sportier drive?

I always used sway bars to tranfer weght from one end to another, from the looser to the stiffer. Back in Formula V days, zero rear roll stiffness was popular to load the front tires in tires and avoid terminal understeer (see "unladen understeer").

Colin Chapman did not believe in sway bars other than as a minor tuning aid. Back in the day when I autocrossed Covvettes and other big front engined (well 'vette was realy mid) V8s, a big rear sway bar was installed to make it easier to get the rear end out biut had a bigger one in front. Could also combine with late braking to load the front tires & get a high polar moment rotating. Best to have a locker though because it will try to lift the inside wheel on the stiffer end, handy to carry a front tire over the apex of a turn.

Personally I like the way the Heep eats up miles on the Interstate but would not try to autocross it, that is not its purpose. For me it does exactly what I want and well.

Could use about 2" of lowering mainly to make it easier to enter/alight.

18s vs 20s, I didn't notice a difference in road feel. I did notice a bit more harshness in ride, but nothing major like some people to make it sound like. And it certainly didn't turn it into some sort of canyon carving sports coupe.

The SRT communicates more, and it took a lot more than some roll bars and endlinks to do that, but the SRT8 still doesn't have the same sort of road feel you get in a real sports car or even some of the better sport sedans. It's a weight thing, the Jeeps just weigh too much to feel the same. They might equal or better the performance, but it never feels like it is. It's a characteristic not at all unique to the SRT either, all the sporty SUVs have it.

Bottom line is, even the SRT doesn't have the same road feel and overall feeling of sportiness as some little Japanese sport sedan or a true sports car. And that's a great thing because it rides a whole lot nicer than those little cars too, because that extra weight and wheelbase gives it a ride that doesn't border on bone shattering over rougher pavement.

Re: Upgrades to make the WK2 a sportier drive?

To answer the OP's original query about making a WK2 V6 sporty

Improve the wheels and tires (start with better tires, keep the wheels light and not too wide)

An upgraded sway bar set will keep cornering flat and possibly increase cornering speed

Upgrade the brakes you can start by upgrading the brake pads, the next progression would be larger rotors then possibly full SRT brakes

Adding a freer exhaust system will improve responsiveness and add to the sporty feel.

It has been said over and over again that the tranny gearing is the biggest thing that stands in the way of the fun. The V6 is a fun engine since you have to keep the engine speed up but it feels like a rotary not much feeling of torque up in he revs with a free flowing exhaust

The v6 is lighter up front so that helps in the handling department.

Re: Upgrades to make the WK2 a sportier drive?

Again, thanks all for the input -- There are a lot of comments about how it will never feel like a small Japanese sedan. What I was really inquiring about was making the Jeep feel more like the X5, which is a bit more buttoned down because that was their design intent.

I had some time to kill this afternoon so I stopped in and drove the V6 again. I think the new transmission will transform the Jeep -- the current gearing doesn't do it any favors and the shifts are so slow.
