Upgrades to make the WK2 a sportier drive?

About 6 months ago, I test drove the GC with the V6 and decided to wait until I could try it again with the 8-speed and also the diesel.

I love the looks of the GC, but I wish it was more fun to drive and had better feedback (my current car is a Lexus IS250 which is slow but fun around corners). The ideal vehicle for me is probably an X5d but man they are expensive.

Has anyone modified their GC with suspension upgrades, etc to make it feel a bit more sporty? What did you do and did it transform the way it drives?

V8, bwoody sway links, tuner, exhaust, 20+" wheels and rubber, cai.

Somebody stop me.

Joking aside, test drive the Hemi, and no, this isn't a swordfight of v6 vs. v8.

Re: Upgrades to make the WK2 a sportier drive?

I've been reading up on this (By Searching) and found that people are putting the rear sway bar from the SRT on the WK2 and notice a nice improvement.

If it's anything like the F-Sport rear sway bar I added to my IS350...it'll be great. It's also cheaper than the F-Sport...so I will definitely give it a shot.

With sport mode and a rear sway bar, I'm hoping to get a confident feel in cornering, but have zero hope (and shouldn't) that it'll ever be as fun as my IS350.

SRT's are meant for fun, every other GC is meant for comfort and off road capability.

Has Jeep released fuel economy predictions for the HEMI and the 8-speed?

I think I saw 21 Hwy on their website, but know it's been mentioned here plenty of times.

The SRT is a pretty good option if you want a sport wk2 :P

If you want tight hanlding, skip out the air suspension. Theres a reason the SRT doesn't come with it.

The air suspension has the same problem all air suspensions have. The lower your ride height, the lower your spring rate goes. That's why you don't see it on an SRT, that and it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to need to lift something like an SRT unless it starts out really low.

Porsche makes it work on the Cayenne GTS and Turbos and the like, with higher performance levels than the SRT FWIW, so it's really just an engineering design challenge, and when dealing with a limited production vehicle like the SRT, it wouldn't be cost effective to engineer a new air suspension for it.

The Grand Cherokee is never going to be sporty like the IS. Even the SRT will not have the same feel as the IS, because it weighs MASSIVELY more. You won't feel the Gs from the road the same way, etc. so even if you had the same performance, it would not feel the same.

You're trying to turn a 5000 pound SUV designed for offroading and being a comfortable ride into a corner carver, and it simply won't happen with minor bolt on stuff.

If handling is your main goal, the SRT or something like an X3 M Sport, or the Q5S is really where you should be looking, they weigh a lot less, are a lot smaller, and are a lot more of a sporty ride.

Good advice here, and he is right. The SRT sits at about 5300 pounds and it will throw down enough G's to scare most people. No way that is going to feel like an Lexus IS though. I will say that the SRT Jeep outperforms the Cayenne S and GTS in both cornering and 0-60. I took the S and GTS out for a test drive before buying the Jeep. Nice vehicles...but not designed for us taller guys.

The SUV segment is not designed as a whole to perform like a small Japanese import.

Re: Upgrades to make the WK2 a sportier drive?

I will be following this thread closely since I really want to transform my 2012 overland something more like the SRT. I know taking into account the air suspension and Engine. But i'm sure I can still change a few things to make it more exciting to drive. CAI and exhaust from what I hear only change the sound of the Jeep. My jeep Service guy says not to change to much out of my jeep because it's only going to wear it out faster and maybe void warranty. But this forum can change things around with people putting in their great ideas.

Re: Upgrades to make the WK2 a sportier drive?

Thanks for the input so far -- I know the GC will never match the IS for feel. The regular X5's don't either, but there is a gap between the X5 and the GC that I would pay to close if a suspension and wheel upgrade would do it.

The dynamic limits of the GC compared to my IS are much lower but if the handling and communication from the vehicle could be improved, something this size can still feel like an (albeit heavy) extension of your body when driving which for me is what provides the fun.

For what it's worth, I drove the V6 Laredo X which is probably the worst combination. I'm guessing the 20" tire/wheel package alone take a lot of the softness and wollow out of the truck and offer the steering a bit more responsiveness and feedback?

Re: Upgrades to make the WK2 a sportier drive?

I just really think you're looking at the wrong vehicle here. The Jeep is a great SUV, but there is nothing sporty about it outside of the SRT. You can't slap a sway bar on a 5,000 lb softly sprung and bushed SUV and expect that to do much of anything for you.

I really think you should look at an X3, or maybe an Audi Q5. I LOVED the Q5, I would have bought that in a heartbeat but its small in the back seat and one of the big things we wanted the Jeep for was trips, and driving family around when we were visiting, etc.

Or perhaps a CPO X5.
