Break it down by individual fuel ups and you have a better statistical sample. Regardless, while the sample size may not be up to par for an academic paper, it's enough to get a good idea for most.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry with you guys going at each other over engine choice. Seriously!
You have a choice, you buy what you want, and live with your choice. Don't give others a hard time over their choice, it's a free world.

Here in Oz, (downunder) we just LOVE our diesels, and especially love the JGC 3.0 litre motor. I tow a 3 Tonne van, and the combination of grunt and fuel economy just beats anything else hands down. Diesel also usually is dearer here than petrol, but it's worth it all the same.
Would I buy the diesel as a city commuter? Don't know, that's not what I use my JGC for.
I didn't buy the diesel because it is CHEAPER over the life of the vehicle, or because it is cheaper at fill up time, even though it is arguably both. (Much better resale.) However I will not argue that here anyway.

I bought it because I get excellent range between fills, excellent fuel economy, the motor has brilliant low down torque, and it's a joy to drive, a joy to tow with. Period.

I love my (diesel) Grand Cherokee.
As I said, get the engine you want, and live with it.
