Re: Usable lifetime of 2014 Grand Cherokee
That paragon of "quality," Toyota has gone downward since the early 2000s---when recalls began, so the vaunted Japanese brands are not as good as they used ot be while US made is not as bad as they used to be.
Seems like the Big 3 makes two types of cars: they either last forever or they are a bucket of piss. They are either indestructable or they are service bay queens. I am sure I can find some Yugo owner who is just ecstatic about his pride and joy that has 300,000 miles and never leaked a drop of oil and never asked for more than gas and an occassional oil change.
But it's still a crap shoot and no one can predcit what brand will out last you. I've been disappointed with my 2004 Tyoyta 4Runner, $3,600 worth of repairs in the last 3 of the 6 years of ownership----just as soon as the warranty expired and it went downhill. What a coinciden. Got burned buying a newly designed and highly touted 2010 Ram Laramie diesel, now because I have "stupid" stamped on my forehead--that's a birthmark! I bought a Jepp GC. Oh yeah, awarded most reliable domestic manufacturer in 2011 by of all entities, Consumer Reports and even carries a RECOMMDENDED in their rag. Best of the domestic manufacturers is like winning the gold at the Special Olympics.....
But where else can we go? Land Rover? Hah! BMW? Yeah, right. Lexus? Good reputation but have I reached the point that only $60k can get me a decent reliable car?
I think that Jeep has done a good job and the quality between the WK2 and previous models are night and day. It is ironic that it took FIAT--Fix It Again, Tony, the poster child of imbecile car manufactureres to instill quality control! With some luck, regular maintenance, and prayer, it will last 10 year+. 10 years and 250,000 miles without leaving me stranded or broke with repair bills and I will be ecstatic.
