Used 2012 WK2 Overland with incomplete recalls

Have held off contact with used car salesman on a 2012 WK2 overland while trying to find info on potential problems with quadra lift suspension on this MY overland. Didn't really want the overland except for features it offers (excluding QL) that I want.

Went to https://vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/vinLookup and found that this vehicle has an incomplete recall (remedy known) from may 2014 and August 2014 and an incomplete from April 10 2015 for which there is no known remedy to date.

This was a 3 yr leased vehicle with 25k miles when purchased by the dealer.
It has the designation "certified pre-owned", which is supposed to mean it has passed all these checks.

question: if a dealer is trying to sell a vehicle with 3 outstanding recalls (not disclosed), is that reason enough to immediately cross this dealer off the list?
The price is $33488 & no indication of budging (we walked a week ago).

Re: Used 2012 WK2 Overland with incomplete recalls

That seems a little high if I compare that price to the residual on my leased 14 Overland. There's room to deal. If they don't want to, walk away.

The 2011-13's may have had a few more problems with QL than the 2014-15's do based on what you can read here in the forum. As with any high tech feature found on today's vehicles it's probably a good idea to look into an extended warranty for your own peace of mind.

I don't think many dealers trying to sell used vehicles make a habit of disclosing outstanding recalls as it can be quite a turn off for the customer. That doesn't mean the dealer is necessarily trying to put one over on you. It's fairly easy to look up TSB's and recalls on any vehicle today and it's really part of the research any buyer should be doing when considering a purchase.

You can find that kind of info here...

Re: Used 2012 WK2 Overland with incomplete recalls

Logic says to make them agree to do the recalls. Price seems high, but may be determined by availability in your area. I watched my trade in last year in the dealer's ads. They reduced the asking price weekly until sold. However there are swarms of WK2's in my area. I stopped at a traffic light last week and there was one to the left, one to the right and one behind me!

Re: Used 2012 WK2 Overland with incomplete recalls

Thanks MDBones & AAAA,

Here are the recalls. It bothers me that the one on the brake booster from 2014 has the highlighted paragraph below. Clearly the dealer knew about this when purchased at auction in March 2015 and chose not to repair it. That makes me question the ethics of the dealer, as it sounds like a safety issue (although I do realize that sometimes these things can be exaggerated).

*******
IMPORTANT: Some of the involved vehicles may be in dealer used vehicle inventory. Dealers should complete this recall service on these vehicles before retail delivery. Dealers should also perform this recall on vehicles in for service. Involved vehicles can be determined by using the VIP inquiry process.
********

The sun visor wiring recall doesn't bother me so much, but the fuel relay does as there is apparently no available fix to date.

Prices are generally a bit high in the DC Metro area & this is slightly lower than comparable overlands that were on carmax a few weeks ago, but I don't know if those had outstanding recalls, as I omitted them because I wanted light interior.

Definitely will not pay asking price with these outstanding recalls and will not purchase unless they agree to me taking off lot to have my mechanic inspect & test drive. (They were reluctant about that but seemed to agree to that possibility when I left last week).

Still very nervous about the QL for 2012 & can't afford a used 2014 with all the options I want. May have to put some more money into my 2005 liberty & hope it goes for another 2 yrs & wait for a 2014 overland (or maybe the 2014 limiteds have more of the options that were only available on the overland in 2012)

I need good ground clearance & traction for very deep, soft sand beach driving in Ocracoke NC, but that & snow driving are the only reason we need 4x4.

Re: Used 2012 WK2 Overland with incomplete recalls

I believe that there are available fixes for all 3 three of these recalls and should be done free of charge at any Jeep dealer. I recently bought a used 013' Overland V-8 4WD and based upon what I paid I would say you should be able to buy a 012' for something around $31K.

My 2012 hasnt had the updates/recalls done as of date. It is an overland with the QL suspension and 90k miles as I type this. I havent had so much as a hiccup with my Hemi Jeep.

Thanks, when I checked the 2015 recall today, it says there is currently no fix available, but I agree that the 2014s should have already been done by this dealership, as they are a new (as well as used) jeep chrysler dodge sales & service dealership. That is one reason I question their ethics. The service could easily have been performed prior to putting it up for sale in their used jeep inventory.

Re: Used 2012 WK2 Overland with incomplete recalls

I kind of have to agree with you there.

It's one thing to not perform the recalls on something that's headed to auction. Those are always "as-is" and it's on the person buying to check that stuff out. Further, a lot of those vehicles end up being parted out, so it's less of an issue.

On a recent off lease vehicle sold by a dealer, there's no excuse not to perform those recalls first. If the customer knows about them, he's going to have to do them anyway. If the customer doesn't, that's a lawsuit waiting to happen by not providing a safe vehicle after "certifying" it.

I doubt a 12 GC going to auction is going to get parted out, unless it's a wreck.

I don't think in this case the dealer is trying to skate on doing the recalls as he's going to get paid for it anyway from FCA. There's no rush to do them if it's still for sale on their lot. They could simply be waiting to sell it, then do them. I wouldn't read too much into this.

I never said it would be.

I was talking about trade-ins that would never hit the lot. For example, my truck was almost 17 years old when I traded it in. It absolutely went to auction.

Then it really wasn't germane to the conversation.

In that case, feel free to skip over my posts in the future if you don't feel they add value.

My point was, this isn't some dirt old vehicle going up for auction "as is". It's an off lease vehicle sold with a warranty and a declaration of quality.

That makes it a big deal since whoever buys it has to take it back or delay taking it home to get those repairs made, assuming they have knowledge of them. They should have been done at the time of the quality check.
