Using the ERS

I've a 2011 Grand Cherokee with quadratrac 1, so I suspect I need to know more about the ERS for light off road conditions and sand and snow. (Especially getting started in deep snow!) I've always had a low gear in my other 4x4s but now I don't. Any advice, cautionary tales, or funny stories would be deeply appreciated.
