V-6 oil change

I am thinking about doing my own oil changes after I use the couple free I have coming from the dealer. I think I am going to use Mobil 1 5w-30. I was wondering if anyone has done an oil change on this engine and know what size socket for the drain plug and what size for the filter cap. I saw in the directions they talk about tightening the filter to 18 ft lbs. I would assume snug is good. Any advice?

I've had 2 oil changes and both times, the shop had to make a run to the dealer to get an oil filter...FYI

Re: V-6 oil change

I have an oil filter that I bought at the dealer. I was thinking about running Mobil 1 extended performance 5W-30. I an just not sure about the warrenty since I would have no proof the oil was changed if something were to fail at some point. I would have proof that I bought oil and a filter, but I'm not sure how you would prove you changed it. Anyway does anyone have any thought on this oil?

Re: V-6 oil change

Im gonna do my 1st at 1000 miles with conventional oil. I will probably use a torque wrench to "feel" an 18 ft lb tightening.

As far as proving you did an oil change. All you need to do is keep your receipts from where you bought the filter and oil. Probably 2 receipts as the dealer might be the only place to get the filter right now(3.6L)

Its on Chrysler, to prove you Didnt do the changes. Keep in mind Chrysler only calls for 8000 mile oil changes. So it shouldnt be hard to save a few receipts. And Engine failure is almost the last thing that goes wrong in modern vehicles up to 200K miles. So I wouldnt worry.

Re: V-6 oil change

If you are doing your own changes be very careful to keep receipts and follow the Chrysler recommendations for the oil. The manual (with info scattered all over the place; who edits this thing?) says the 3.6L V6 should use API certified oil SAE 5W-30 grade, meeting Chrysler Material Standard MS-6395. If the label doesn't include that last item, you can check the oil manufacturer's web site for more info, or even send them an email.

Note the manual says to use SAE 5W-20 in the Hemi.

Engine failures are rare, but I had an oil pump fail about 20 years ago on one of my 4L I6 XJs, just outside of warranty. Good receipts of oil changes done to the letter saved me plenty in negotiating some coverage.
