Re: V-6 or V-8 on 2014-- Opinions

Tow package used to be on a 4x4 V8 model. SO upgraded cooling, brakes, fullsize spare, etc.

IMO, the V6 isn't suited to very well equipped and thus heavy GC models. It feels strained to move the vehicle around. A V6 does feel a lot less strained in a 4x2 less well equipped model.

The V6 has adequate performance, it rather just doesn't feel as confident and luxurious IMO. For me, I was getting a 4x4 Overland, so V8 was the only option. The V6 just felt too weak for all 5200 pounds of Overland.

I test drove the new 2014 Overland with V6 and I will say with the new 8spd and sport mode it really feels a LOT better, but im still not sure if it feels good enough to keep me satisfied. Then I get my mind set on the V8 again, then I look at the damn fuel prices once again going up and up, and the fact that the V8 uses mid grade fuel (although a lot of people just use regular in them now), the extra cost of maintenance, and the fact that it costs a couple extra grand right off the bat.

I guess it all mainly comes down to fuel economy. The new V6 does pretty well and comes close to a lot of family sedans as far as fuel economy goes. THe V8 not so much, but it would probably be a little more fun to drive.

Canis pretty much summed it up nicely right above.
I am pretty much feeling the same way, but I was not aware of the extra maintenance costs. What are the additional cost of maintaining the V8 vs V6? Also, will it hurt to use 87 octane in the V8?

7 quarts of oil compared to 6 quarts on the V6 and 16 spark plugs that need to be replaced every 30k miles compared to 6 that need replaced every 100k. Not that big of deal in my opinion when we're talking $50k vehicles.

It will run fine on 87 octane, with a little less timing and a few less HP. This will be my 4th Hemi (3rd 5.7L) and I've always run 89 octane until I installed a tuner that required 91.

Thanks...What about the 87 octane, will it hurt the V8? What are the benefits of 89 octane?

Re: V-6 or V-8 on 2014-- Opinions

I'm probably in the minority here, but I almost never tow anything and have no plans on taking my bright shiny new $45K SUV anywhere near *serious* off-road, so the QDII wasn't a big deal... and I put on a LOT of miles for work, so fuel costs add up quick. I was leaning towards the V6, then drove both V6/V8 versions of the 2013 model and was leaning a bit back towards undecided... then I got behind the wheel of a '14 and the new transmission made a HUGE difference with the V6. Just felt quicker/peppier, and wasn't straining at all during the whole 2-3 miles I put on it ().

Of course perspective is important here as well - I'm coming from a Ford Escape Hybrid, otherwise known as the Gutless Wonder... so any improvement in power/weight is noticeable and appreciated.

For me, it was V6 all the way. When gas is $7/gal in a couple years I'm going to look even smarter.

And besides, if it's speed or performance I'm in the mood for, there's always that nasty little beast in my profile pic.

I think with the cylinder deactivation you should get the V8 and have fun with it. Definately test drive both engines but if you want the power when you might need it, get he 8 cylinder because the cylinder deactivation will help out on the gas mileage, while it might not be the same as the 6 cylinder you'll enjoy the power of the 8.

How long have each of these 2 gas engines been in use?

One is tried and true.
One is, not new, but updated technology.

That in itself makes neither one better or worse.

How many miles do you drive per year?
