Re: V-6 or V-8 on 2014-- Opinions

Guys this is something that may help in my decision. I'm coming from an '07 Commander with the 4.7L V-8. It's rated at 235 hp @ 4500 rpm and 305 lb-ft torque @ 3600. Considering the improvements to the V-6 how do you think the 2014 Pentastar 3.6 V-6 (290 hp 260 lb-ft @ 6350) would compare to my 2007 V-8?

I don't mean to sound rude, but why is everyone basing their v6 or v8 decision on comments on a forum?

Test drive!! It's what dealerships are for.

Discussing this before a test drive gives some people an idea of what to look for.

Taking your advice, we should just delete the thread ... which would include your post.

+1

To me the driving experience between the V6 and V8 is night and day. Totally worth the hit in gas mileage, not like you are buying a Jeep to save at the pump regardless - nor is it a cheap vehicle to start with.

However, many people are content with the V6 - it is just going to come down to individual choice!

The 4.7L has torque, so it moves off the line well. The 3.6L will require you to spin it up more to get it going. It will feel more strained to move the vehicle in this regard.

Torque is what moves these big vehicles. Hp is what marketers use to tell you their product is better.

Re: V-6 or V-8 on 2014-- Opinions

I have driven both. The v6 is adequate with the 8 speed, it moved the vehicle around relatively well, but you do have to push the engine somewhat hard if you need to rapidly accelerate from a stop light, merge onto a highway or pass quickly on the highway. The V8 does all this much more effortlessly. I have a very short commute (about 3.5 miles) so even with weekend driving I will probably be below 100 miles a week. For that reason I am likely going with the Hemi. I was thinking diesel, but the short drives are bad for the turbos and the emission system on the diesel.

Re: V-6 or V-8 on 2014-- Opinions

Is there anyone who took delivery of a '14 V-6 in the last few weeks who can give a real-life update of their impressions over a period of time? Any regrets?

I Test Drove both yesterday for about 15 miles each on mixed roads including highway at 75-80 mph and the above quoted post is exactly how I would describe it. The V6 was more than "adequate" for average driving, but when I needed to merge on to the highway, or pass a car, or go up a big hill the V8 just did it much more effortlessly. After driving both, it would be V8 or nothing for me.

I have driven both. The v8 is a clear choice.
No matter what, the tranny shift points are so low on both vehicles to save fuel, that it can be frustrating expecting to be in the right gear. 2012 gc overland.

Guys...How about this..If you never drove the V-8 and had only the V-6 do you think you would find it lacking or is it just when compared with the V-8?

Re: V-6 or V-8 on 2014-- Opinions

It is all a matter of expectations. I feel that a few too many want their 5000 lbs porker to move swiftly and think the V8 is life changing. I come from a car that with just the right clutch drop would smoke the SRT. For me to expect the Jeep to move as swiftly when there's a 1700 lbs difference (the other car is 278 whp / 352 wheel lbs-ft / AWD with 3 LSDs / 3300 lbs) between them is unrealistic. I chose the v6 because I have expectations anchored in reality because frankly 7.5 sec to 60 mph is just as slow as 8.5 sec. The neighbors Camry will out drag you from the traffic light regardless. And you will be unlikely to chase down the punk kid in the rice burner with your Jeep in the twisty stuff. If you're not towing on a regular basis the v8 is really an expensive placebo.

Re: V-6 or V-8 on 2014-- Opinions

I personally have never owned a V8 and I have always had an SUV (97 GC, 01 GC, 08 Trailblazer, Temp - 95 GC). Do I wish it had a little more, yes I do. But what I ask it do with the V6 is fine and don't think I need to spend the extra money for a v8. I tow my trailer with atv and never have had a problem with the v6. I'd rather save the money and the mpg then the few times I wish I had the v8. If that stuff wasn't a matter to me then I would probably get the v8, but that stuff does.
