Re: V6 Passing Performance

I'm one who was all about the v6 for gas reasons but now wish I went with the hemi. I feel the v6 is sluggish sometimes. I do have a 270 hp sedan in the stable so maybe that's why?? My wife and I both kinda wish we got the bigger engine choice. Then again the 25 mpg highway is nice lol..

Re: V6 Passing Performance

I'd say to wait for the 8-speed automatic if you're considering the V6. That's exactly what I'm doing. I'm coming from a V6 4Runner and after a test drive in a V8 WK2, I have to say that my V6 4Runner has better acceleration and much better passing power. I wanted a V6 WK2, but I'm ruling that out completely, at least until I get to drive one with the 8-speed transmission. I'm hoping that the extra gear ratios transform the vehicle and make it perform a lot better.

Re: V6 Passing Performance

This has now turned into another V6 vs. V8 thread - where the Hemi guys say there's a night and day difference -- until the very next thread they complain the "Hemi is slow, underpowered, etc."....and the V6 guys say it's "plenty powerful". Just drive and buy what you want. What you want is not what the next guy wants.

Fun for me will be driving my Jeep on the beach. Any idea what 0-60 will be with each engine?

Re: V6 Passing Performance

A lot of the difference is the nearly 1,000 lbs (25%) more for a 4x4 Limited campared to a 4x2 Laredo. Can expect the lighter vehicle to be that much faster for the same power. Think of the change in kinetic energy.

Not many cars have this kind of weight range.

If you have a need for speed, a Hemi Charger is a better choice.

I agree. I came from a v6 Tacoma and it would blow the doors off my jeep.. My v6 wk2 just feels heavy and sluggish at times

Not what I experienced. When we decided on getting an SUV, we narrowed our choices down to the WK2 and a 4Runner because of their 4x4 capability. The WK2 had a much nicer interior and there was a big difference between the V8 in the WK2 and the V6 in the 4Runner. Because of those two things, we went with the WK2 V8.

Re: V6 Passing Performance

I just took the V6 and the Hemi for a test drive. I found the V6 to be adequate, but the Hemi had noticeably more power. I am sure I could make do with the V6 as I do not haul anything. Of course I want the Hemi, especially since I did not have to fill up the tank.

I am going to try to get the dealership to give me a loaner car so I can take it on a long drive with a mountain pass and some passing opportunities.

This is the first time I have driven a JGC, and I must say, I was very, very impressed with it.

I say it's like a John Deer verses a Ford tractor race, their both so damn slow, IT DOESN"T MATTER!! AND Everyone plows the field at about the same pace anyway!

Which has been my point all along. It's so funny to see some Hemi owners here peacock around simply because it's a Hemi, never mind how frickin slow it is, so long as it's faster than you mentality. Which brings up the other point, if speed and power are the such important factors for buying, then why did you buy the slowest V8 SUV offered?

Re: V6 Passing Performance

Looking at the gears and the torque spread of the Pentastar, I doubt that road performance will change that much. There is a new "granny" first that few will use except in parades. 8th would have it turning about 1400 rpm at 60 so cannot use much below. 7th is the same as 5th now so there is really just one new gear in the spread and I would not be surprised if it often skip shifts.

Bottom line, the '14 GCs are known to be receiving a 3.42ish rear gear. The Ram 1500 also has the Pentastar 8 speed but to get 25 MPG highway the HFE gets a 3.22, adaptive grille. and a tonneau cover. With a 3.55 it drops to 23 mpg.

So I expect the '14 V6 with 8 speed to be rated 24 MPG highway and maybe 25 if the EPA does their usual rounding trick.

That assumes no change in the engine. OTOH a new set of peakier cams could narrow the torque band while kicking up the peak. The 8 speed could make this possible and if so add another mpg.

Where the 8 speed will really help is with the Hemi which has enough torque for a 1200 rpm cruise and even more so the diesel.

Further, not much difference in the models under 4500 lbs and more for those over 5,000. And then there is the magic of advertising.

Final kicker could be the availablity of the 8H70, if production is slow to ramp it could hold up the diesel further.

What will be the most interesting will be the prices of the various options. Right now CJF could sell more than they are making.
