V8s- Which gas do you use?

I see in the manual the recommended fuel is 89. Anyone use regular in their V8s?

Re: V8s- Which gas do you use?

MANY,MANY threads on this! Although 89 is recommended, 87 is perfectly fine. A very slight loss of power "might" be noticed.

Re: V8s- Which gas do you use?

I'm approaching 50K miles on my MY12 Summit Hemi...and I've exclusively used 87 octane fuel the whole time. No issues; very good fuel economy (16 ratting; 21 hwy - during warm weather) and easier to buy. (many stations, such as Costco don't sell mid-grade anyway)

Good to know. I thought for sure I would be using 89, seems I may not have to

Re: V8s- Which gas do you use?

I used 87 in my 2005 V8 GC and never had a problem with it for nearly 6 years. I switched to 89 in the last few months of ownership though and I DID notice a difference in power. After driving it for nearly 6 years on 87 I knew the vehicle pretty well so for me the 89 was noticeable and better. So, from then on, I only used 89 in my V8 GC's - 2005, 2011 and 2014 (for the 2014 I have also tried REC 90 which is a better gas without ethanol but not worth the price difference and hard to find). If it is any justification on paying for the 89, you should get at the very least a bit of an MPG boost too.

Re: V8s- Which gas do you use?

One thing to consider in addition to the grade of gas is the quality of gas. I have been using Shell/Costco for a long time, particularly in my wife's former Acura RDX which was turbocharged. I noticed a difference between them and secondary brands.

On our trip to PHX and back last month in the GC, I ran premium in an effort to get the best gas mileage possible. I'm not sure it helped. On the last tank, there wasn't a Shell available but there was a Chevron. When I gassed up after that, GasCubby showed a 1.1 improvement in MPG. The first 1,800 miles were between 17.8 and 19.2; the last 400 or so was 20.1. It might be coincidental, but there are no Chevron stations in my area so I can test it again. I wish there was

Re: V8s- Which gas do you use?

I used 87 at first, but switched to 89 and it runs much smoother. My fishbite is just about gone. Octane does nothing for gas mileage so don't think you will get better mileage. But if you are looking for gas mileage then you are looking at the wrong vehicle. The cost is about $2 per tankfull more but the performance is worth it in my opinion. HTH.

Re: V8s- Which gas do you use?

My owner's manual recommends 91 octane. No 91 around here so I use 93 octane and always use a major, name brand gas. Always have, even in my wife's 2007 Murano.

Getting 20+ mpg on the interstate.

Depends how you intend to use it. for running around the suburbs in an average climate 87 is just fine if you are towing or loading down 89 is probably a better choice. heavy load and warmer environments where you are more likely to get some detonation the 89 will do you some good to prevent the timing from retarding. its the same gas and same detergent in 87 or 89 the 89 just has 2 more octane points which are helpful if you are in conditions where the engine can make use of the extra octane.

I agree with the above about brands of gas, stay away from the minimart no name gas, most any of the big names are fine and on the top tier list these days. thing about the no name minimart gas is you don't know what or how much of an additive package it has, could be ok could be garbage. stick with one of the big names and you will be fine. here is the current top tier list.

Top Tier Gasoline

Re: V8s- Which gas do you use?

Shell 91 Octane if I can (Yes I know its overkill) because I don't like ethanol. Otherwise Mobil 89 etc. Eventually when I get a tune (Diablo) it will have to be mainly 91 to be effective. I have tried 87 and that is perfectly fine but I could feel the car a little sluggish at times.

I use a mixture of 87 and 91, depending on the station. No ethanol if I can help it.

You should double check that. The 5.7 HEMI manual recommends 89 octane. Some folks seem to have received the SRT manual by mistake, which is where the confusion comes from.
