Hey All,
So an afternoon project turned into a headache, but it's finally done. I know there are some write-ups for how-to hardwire a radar detector into the fuse box, but not one for wiring into the overhead console. So here it is:
Need:
Radar Detector (Valentine One in this case)
Cables for detector, including wire crimp
T-20 Torx bit
Long Screwdriver
Zip-Ties to clean everything up
Flashlight
So to start, you need to pull down the overhead console. There are four clips that connect the console to the roof. They look like this.
Once off, it looks like this.
This is the harness you need to tap into. Its a 16-pin connector, but you want the yellow/blue wire that is in position #8, or the top corner wire.
Here is the crimp attachment that comes with the V1, sorry my flash is AWOL.
I did not take a picture of the ground, but I used a small T-20 torx screw in the middle of the black plastic where the console used to be. Once you have all of these connections, simply tidy up your cables. I used zip-ties here and secured them to the plastic headliner underneath the console. Probably the most painful part is re-attaching the console to the headliner. This is where I used the long screwdriver. The black plastic part moves, so you need something to press down on it to help re-attach. I opened the sunroof, and wedged the screwdriver in a small space between the metal of the car and the black plastic of the headliner. Once re-attached, power on your detector and admire your work! Keep in mind that this will always be powered when the car is on, including when you use the keyless entry to open the car.
