Re: Valve Body

I would be asking why a new transmission isnt being installed.

I would also ask him who his best transmission tech is, is he the tech working on it and ask to talk to him.

I am lucky because at my local store I know a couple good techs and can walk out in the shop and talk to them. I am friends with the owner, his son( he sold me my Jeep) and the service manager and parts manager. I will always buy any new vehichles from them. I do know Chrysler is pushing back on stuff, for example a transmission must now be rebuilt unless they can show that the cost would be about 70% of a new unit. So they have to screw around removing the trans, tear it down and then send pictures of all the bad parts. My pal says he doesnt see too many issues on the Grands, some on the new Cherokees( valve bodys and replacing transmission because they are told to, doesnt have to tear down) and 62TE in vans (converters fail and people keep driving them while everything is slipping and frags the transmission).

I would push with the Service Manager to get another transmission if the next VB replacement doesnt fix it.

I did ask about putting in a new transmission and according to the service manager the Chrysler/Jeep tech said that was unnecessary and the error codes are related to the valve body

I am composing my letter to the complaint department, hopefully I will see some more progress after that.

Each state is different but, when your state's lemon law allows a usage fee (OH doesn't ), the basic math is they take what you paid for it and divide by either 100k or 120k (varies by state) which is considered the effective life. That rate is your usage/offset rate they will charge you times the miles you have driven it. In theory it's fair. You got some use so you pay for that use. But, there are further twists when it gets down to the specific case. The big one is even in states that have legal usage fees there are usually legal precedents that say you can't be charged for the "damaged" or "diminished use" so that is handled by only charging for the miles up to your first documented service visit or other documented beginning of the problems. My rep came at me (OH resident) using the MI lemon law which has offset as described above using a 100k life. He immediately cut the $10k ($50k/100k x 20k used) to $5k to account for damaged use, negotiating, etc...when he figured out I've been around the block a couple hundred times but since it is zip for me in OH he told me he was done, case closed until/if I open a LL case with ISG. Since FCA started me down the path I rolled with it and it worked (is working) out.

Ya this is the heart of the tranny so they keep monking with it and the programming (flashes) to round off the rough edges folks are having. When they just tweak a part they do the AA to AB to AC, etc.. part number migration but when they substantially change it they shift to a new part number.

Regarding the new tranny. The only tranny replacements I have been hearing about are when they have monked up the supply lines or there are shavings in the fluid. Most of the behavior based issues are programming and/or valve body addressable. Trannies are $3k (retail) and valve bodies are $600, flashes are small $ so it will take facts and codes for them to replace a whole tranny. I would focus your efforts in your letter on fixing the problem and not demanding a new tranny. You will get better treatment with that approach.

New Transmission AND Torque Converter.
Either that or Lemon Law.

By the way you can get substantial credit on your MaxCare by canceling it and then get it again for free from them. But make sure it's under 12mo/12K miles so that you can get lifetime again.

Re: Valve Body

My story continues...

The garage called yesterday saying I could pick up my jeep but of course I was at work. Luckily one of my wonderful co-workers was gracious enough to go get it for me. When he got back he said, "you will be lucky to make it home!" Wtf!!! He told me that it was still downshifting hard at time. I'm glad he noticed it too so they can't come back and say it's you nothing is wrong.

How can the garage drive this and say it's working perfect? We didn't have any problems with it and we drove it over 200 miles!

Well I did make it home but it does downshift hard at times and the tranny feels really tight. There was one point while coming into A small last night it gave a little stutter and I was like here we go. But luckily nothing happened. Why can't they get this fixed! If I get stranded again I'm not going to be a happy camper!

Re: Valve Body

Contact the dealership. If you can, take the service manager for a ride in it and say it is unacceptable. If they say this is normal, then I would contact Chrysler and start escalating the process for a buyback or something.
