Re: Waiting for 2013 JGC 8 Speed Transmission

LINGOHOCKEN'S comments are consistent with information being published elsewhere in the automotive press. The Kokomo transmission plant is reportedly the facility to be used for domestic production of the XF 8. There have been reports of delays there, but hopefully some one on this forum has the connections to determine the current status of the re-tool at Kokomo.
Meanwhile, like many, I wait.

I test drove the 2012 Grand Cherokee hemi with what is advertised as a 6 speed transmission. And I don't think it is a true 6 speed. But rather a 5 speed with a manual torque converter lock up that occurs when you manually shift up to 6th. If the torque converter is already automatically locked there won't be any change in rpm. To verify this theory, test drive a Grand Cherokee hemi and set the cruise control at 55 or 60 on level ground and then manually shift it up into 6th and then back down to 5th and see if there is change in rpm. In my case there was no change in rpm indicating the torque converter had automatically locked under the above described conditions and this transmission isn't a true 6 speed.

You can't shift up into 6 and be in 6 unless you are going fast enough. It's not a true manual shift. Shifting into 6 simply means that 6th gear can be achieved. I have a 2012 5.7L V8 Hemi 6 speed and the rpms increase if you shift down from 6 to 5. You should have tried your test at 70-75 mph.

You were probably not going fast enough. There are numerous threads around where fellas were testing the difference between the 2011 multispeed and 2012 6 speed, and trust me (or look is up here or on alpar.com), both have 6 forward speeds plus torque converter lock modulation. As mentioned, its not a manual select gearbox, but you can set the max gear... which confuses the heck out of both new guys and those with much experience. The torque converter can engage both in 5th and 6th... adding more variation to your observation. For more predictability, keep rpms over 3000.

Re: Waiting for 2013 JGC 8 Speed Transmission

I think what is happening is the torque converter is simply unlocking at that speed. As a follow up to my post, I did talk to the service manager at my local dealer and he said it was the same 5 speed that was in the 2011. And as I suspected, 6th is not a new gear but simply allows the driver to manually lock or unlock the torque converter. To test this, speed up to a steady speed of 70 on level ground in drive and then manually shift to 6th and see if the rpm drops. If is doesn't, it tells you the converter was locked in Drive and shifting up to 6th doesn't change gears because there isn't a 6th gear and shifting back down to 5th unlocks the torque converter and the rpm will rise.

I would be surprised if Chrylser would invest in the cost of building a true 6 speed for 2012 knowing there is an 8 speed is on the horizon.

Re: Waiting for 2013 JGC 8 Speed Transmission

2012 G.C. with Hemi 6 speed - going 70 mpg in 5th gear and shifting up to 6th drops the rpms down.

2011 G.C. with Hemi Multispeed (not a true 5 speed; there were always 6 gears, just not all used sequentially). - 5 forward gears and 5 down gears. There were two 2nd gears, one used for going up and another for going down.

Jeep uses all 6 speeds sequentially in the Hemi in the 2012s.
