I would assume the specs for the 2013's will be out in April, and I will determine whether it makes sence to get the 2013 or go ahead with the 2012 and book a better deal.
I'm agreeing with you on this one. I want to wait until the 8 Speed if it comes out for the 2013 model. But if it isn't coming until the 2014 model, I think I will end up biting the bullet and settle on the 5speed.

Re: Waiting for 2013 JGC 8 Speed Transmission

Interesting conundrum here. Of course Chryco needs to keep selling as many 5/6-speeds as possible, so they wouldn't want buyers to hold off.

If the 8-speed does drop early-ish in MY '13 for Pentastar, I would think depreciation for 5-speeds sold right before it would be that much worse. Count me out. I'll probably just keep my smaller vehicle and get something used for my towing needs, to tide me over until the 8-speed (and probably diesel) is available.

Re: Waiting for 2013 JGC 8 Speed Transmission

As for reliability of the ZF 8-speed... Versions of this transmission are already in use in several Chrysler vehicles, Audis, BMWs and Rolls Royce vehicles. Of course with the unit being built in a new factory there could be manufacturing defects, etc but the design overall isn't brand new.

I've been quite curious about the reliability of the Pentastar engine, hoping Chrysler has made good improvements. Too early to tell perhaps, they have really bet the farm on this engine since it's being used in everything. Looks like a similar plan for the 8-sp.

Happy Motoring!
I found the above info in an article here: http://www.chicagotribune.com/classi...,4755761.story

New Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango crossovers will start getting an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment by 2013, according to a recent Securities and Exchange Commission filing by Chrysler. The new transmission will be equipped with the standard 3.6-liter V-6 powertrain, replacing the current five-speed automatic transmission. Chrysler says fuel economy will improve by 12%.
The same transmission is used on the 2012 Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger, improving gas mileage to 19/31 mpg city/highway from the previous 18/27 mpg ratings. The Ram 1500 also will get a 3.6-liter V-6 and eight-speed automatic transmission, according to PickupTrucks.com.

You have to read between the lines. Article not so clearly states Model year 2013. What they really mean year 2013.

I was just posting it for informational purposes. I already own a 2012 Overland with a HEMI. What the article tells me is that the only engine the 8 speed will be standard with is the 3.6-liter V6...

Just when will the 2013's be announced? I'll be interested to see just when they plan on introducing the 8 speed.

Re: Waiting for 2013 JGC 8 Speed Transmission

Does anyone think that the increasing gas prices might prompt Jeep to move up the implementation of the 8 speed to a sooner, rather than later, date?

September 1st is the official sales release date. Order banks open on June 6th but they usually don't announce very many details. They *might* show the diesel next month in NY but no confirmation on that. Outside of the diesel they may not make an 8-speed announcement until next spring/summer.

They need to get the plant here up and running before they can produce the 8-spds in large volumes. The Ram will be the next vehicle to get the 8-spd and they won't even start building those until the end of this year.

Milous, thanks for the reply.

I hate the fact that the Ram will be the next vehicle to get the 8 speed but I assume they have to compete with Fords F-150 with eco boost. They've been announcing that the GC was the next to get the 8 speed and now they changed to the Ram? Disappointing to say the least.
