Re: Waiting for 2013 JGC 8 Speed Transmission

Looks more like a numbers game. Pentastar really does not need 8 speeds, might allow reduction to the 3.45 gear for less time in PE over the EPA city cycle but still pushing a barn door over 60 and torque drops off fast under 2000 rpm.

Second, 12% improvement over what ? 2012 Ram 1500 with 3.7 ? City ? Highway ?

OTOH if can tune (no PE) for another 2 mpg in the city cycle (12%) and 1 in the highway (4%) that would be 19/24. Looking at US 2WD V6s for 2012, Enclave/Acacia is 17/24, Ford Explorer 18/25. EPA weights City heavier than Highway. Hmmmmmm.

ps interesting.

So we should probably "assume" Diesel w/ 5 ("6") speed in Q1 2013, and Diesel w/ 8 speed not until Q4 (MY2014) 2013??

I hate waiting. Might be able to make it for first diesel release w/ 5 spd if numbers look good.

Any other reason to wait for MY2014 besides 8 speed? any new features?

The diesel may launch with the 8-speed early next year, depending how things go with the new transmission plant. All dates are tentative at this time.

The 8-speed may go into late 2013 model year V6 models, or may not arrive until 2014 model year. Still up in the air.

The 8-speed is scheduled for 5.7L models in the early part of the 2014 model year.

2014 will bring a mid-cycle refresh which will include exterior tweaks as well as an all-new next generation 8.4" navigation system. 2014 models may also feature engine "Stop-Start". Other new features are planned but I do not have this information yet.

Re: Waiting for 2013 JGC 8 Speed Transmission

Thanks a lot for the info Milous! That settles it for me, getting something used/depreciated to tide me over to at least 2014 diesel. Probably an '08 WK 4.7L.

Thanks Milous, at least it sounds like the 8 speed will launch with the diesel before anything else, and that is what I was hoping for!! I am crossing my fingers it will be out early (Q1) 2013.

Re: Waiting for 2013 JGC 8 Speed Transmission

If what Milous says is the truth, I guess I'm going to pull the trigger sometime after the 2013 launches and get the 5speed.

Re: Waiting for 2013 JGC 8 Speed Transmission

I e-mailed the Kokomo transmission plant about the 8-speed production (I hadn't read the latest posts in this thread yet) and they verified that Kokomo will not start building the 8-speed until the end of this year. This backs up what Milous just said.

From what I can tell, the new ZF plant won't be open for quite a while either, so if Jeep is going to use the 8-speed in the WK2 before Kokomo plant starts production, they would need to source the transmissions from Germany. I suppose that is still a possibility, but probably a remote one unless there is extra capacity at the German plant to support it. I have no idea if they can do it. (Wish they would!!)

Re: Waiting for 2013 JGC 8 Speed Transmission

Truly, what do you think the MPG gains would be from going to the 8speed compared to 5speed. 1mpg city / 1-2mpg highway ??

Re: Waiting for 2013 JGC 8 Speed Transmission

It's not so much the economy... I think 1st gear is way too tall in the 5-speed. I expect the 8-sp to be better around town as well as have better economy.

Consider how much money and time people spend trying to pick up an extra 5hp here and 2hp there with common mods (chip, cold-air, etc, etc). I expect the new trans will be a much bigger deal when it comes to the daily performance of the WK2 and though it kills me to wait because I'm excited about it now, I think I'll feel very stupid if I pass up this enormous design improvement because I'm impatient.

I'm impatient as well and want to get one now, but I agree with you. Hopefully the 8 speed will make a surprise and get here sooner than later.

...and if it doesn't come until 2014 you holding out? I have a 2005 WK Hemi and as time goes on, my resale value drops. That's my dilemma.
