I expect the new trans will be a much bigger deal when it comes to the daily performance of the WK2 and though it kills me to wait because I'm excited about it now, I think I'll feel very stupid if I pass up this enormous design improvement because I'm impatient.
You will be waiting another year at least. The plant that is going to make the 8speed tranny is still under construction. By the time they finish the plant there will be a back order for sure. Too many models going to get 8 speed. I ordered mine 2 weeks ago waited to long!!!!!!!

Probably not. I have a 08 Trailblazer that I don't want to go through another winter with, plus the gas mileage sucks on this thing.

It does feel like the wait will be forever.

There are three transmission plants involved with the 8-speed:

1) The German ZF plant
2) The South Carolina ZF plant, which is still under construction. I think this plant will be open reasonably soon; they are hiring right now. I don't know how long it will take for them to get transmissions to market.
3) The Kokomo, Indiana Chrysler transmission plant which "...will start building the 8-speeds by the end of the year" per the e-mail I received from the plant.

Re: Waiting for 2013 JGC 8 Speed Transmission

Possibly the last Chrysler model to get the ZF-8 will be the WK2. It sells so well as is that probably other models will get front teat to help boost their fortunes.

Of course, all this is speculation, no matter how carefully thought out. But continuing along that line anyway, new and toughened government safety and mileage regs are coming up in 2014 and beyond. So who knows whether we'll be looking back at 2012 and 2013 as a shining time for enjoyable vehicles. If the ZF-8 goes into the WK2 in calendar year 2014, who knows what the tradeoff will be because of these new regs.

But if you wait for the 8-spd it may only be a year or so until the next gen model will come out, so you might as well wait. But then, maybe only a few years after that a new form of fuel may be in the works, so you might as well wait for that also. But wait, I think flying cars are only 20 or so years off, you should probably wait for that.

I bought a 2011 and if I really want a new feature, I will sell this one and buy another one. No sense in waiting, something better is always in the works IMO.

I've driven the CRD 3.0L in Australia and in 1st gear there's real oomph! It's actually quicker then the 5.7 V8 from 0-62mph (100KPH)!! When 2nd gear kicks in, though, the oomph dies. I'm thinking that with closer gear ratios the 8-speed auto should (?) have a longer acceleration plane. Are there any officianados out there to advise us?

I have ordered a JGC and have been told delivery would be in Oct 2012. I have also been told that the 8-speed auto will start production in Jan 2013 with delivery couple of months after. If there's going to be a marked difference in performance/power/economy, then I'll cancel my order and wait another 6 months. My current Ford won't devalue any further than it already has..

Re: Waiting for 2013 JGC 8 Speed Transmission

The ZF 8HP box is undoubtedly a wonderful piece of machinery but don't get too excited until we find out the configuration. The VW Amarok and the Porsche Cayenne among others already have this box but at the expense of a 2-speed transfer case. As I understand it, first gear is used as an off-road crawler gear and the other 7 as road gears. So it sounds more of a soft-roader box but at least it promises better fuel consumption and is immensely strong. Assuming that it is the ZF 8HP70 that will be used, it can take 700Nm of torque against the current W5A580 of 580Nm. This comes at the expense of only 3kg more in weight.

Good point. Although the transmission is independent of the transfer case it may be a marketing/$$$ decision that might limit WK2 configurations going forward when the 8sp comes out. I doubt it though. The grand has always been marketed as a true 4x4 and unless you offer 4-lo, you can't do that.

You can order the VW touareg with 8-spd and transfer case, as well as additional diff locks mid and rear if you want to do serious offroading. So no tradeoff here.
The Amarok does have a DSG if I remember correctly and the Cayenne is basically intended for road use only (..and in the Diesel edition almost identical to the touareg...)

Happy Day

Re: Waiting for 2013 JGC 8 Speed Transmission

For the record, the Touareg does not use the ZF transmission but rather an 8-speed Aisin transmission.
