Re: Warning... Hohzayjeep!

Definitely no longer an era of "My word is my word". Sad to hear you lost out. What's sad is that it was a fellow Jeeper.

Good luck trying to get your money or items back. If you don't get any response, and feel like something should be done, file a report through Paypal and/or a police report.

Re: Warning... Hohzayjeep!

I agree with what BlckWK2 stated, if you sent a paypal invoice and they have not responded to it, file a claim with Paypal.

You can also try contacting their local police department. Police do not have the ability to judge on civil matters, however they might be able to investigate it as a theft. Even just the presence of a police officer at this users door might be enough to make him come around. If anything, its worth a call to that department to find out.

If you're really wanting to get your money back, if it were me, I would contact the local police dept, where you live, there may be a way for them to help you. Its worth checking IMO.

Definitely worth checking. You have to be careful how you word it though. Legally speaking, police are not allowed to get involved with civil matters. They are only allowed to investigate and arrest based off crimes. Depending on whom you speak with and how its worded will help determine if they advise you to take it to civil court or if they investigate it as a theft.

I see. In my mind its a theft, but I don't know law and cop stuff, lol. Hopefully the OP has all correspondance he has had with the suspect, and maybe those will help show there was an agreement to exchange money for the goods.

Re: Warning... Hohzayjeep!

That's just... Sucks since you're trying to do another forum member a favor and that happens. I've only had good experiences with buying stuff from people here but my general rule of thumb would be only to do business with people that have been on here for a while and are active posting members.

Back a few years ago on the my350z forums when stuff like this happened, someone local to the offender would always be willing to do a "meet and greet" and post up the results... I'm not saying to put his ride on cinderblocks but...payback's a bitch...especially when the internet knows where you live. Post up the entire shipping address and whatever happens..happens...

Re: Warning... Hohzayjeep!

I absolutely hate reading posts like this from fellow forum members no matter which forum it is I'm posting on. Not sure if there are any health related issues going on with the buyer or not, but that is something that I've read about happening too. Folks were quick to chastise someone on another forum and it turned out the individual had some health related issues and the matter was resolved once they became healthy enough to respond and address the issue.

I've done my share of buying/selling fishing gear and have been very lucky through the years. I always make it a point to have a phone conversation with anyone I am going to deal with before consummating the transaction. I can at least get a feel for who I'm dealing with. It isn't 100% but it at least gives me an opportunity to sniff out whether or not it seems to worthwhile pursuing. If it doesn't smell right, then I move on. I'm not sure this would have helped your situation and may not even help me on future transactions. None the less it's sad to read about and even worse that this sort of thing has permeated the Jeep community.

I also agree with the other comments of having them send you the funds first before sending out said item, but obviously too late for that now. It's unfortunate that people's word isn't what it used to be. Chalk that up to lesson learned.

Also agree with the others that you should look into filing a dispute with PayPal and or reporting it to local police, if for no other reason that it is documented for your situation and possibly for others in the future.

I hope you're able to get resolution to whatever degree you're comfortable and better luck trading in the future.

Re: Warning... Hohzayjeep!

it's a civil matter, don't bother with police

you may be able to file small claims where you live (because that's a venue) or where he lives (also a venue). Either way, you'd need someone to serve him notice of the suit - if he fails to appear or respond you'd win outright if you can prove it happened (which doesn't sound like a big problem). At that point, collection ... doubt he'd just pay up, so you would potentially be able to put a lien on his property - vehicle, house, etc. to collect the court imposed judgement.

you may also be able to add in reasonable costs, atty fees, etc. Selling a car with a lien on it ... not going to happen.

it's not easy, but it may be worth it to you to investigate as an option. internet and trust are not things that should go together.
