Re: Warranty info

I'm taking delivery of my new '16 GC Overland today. Dealer offered me the MaxCare Lifetime warranty for $2500 (at a discount from $3125 lol)

I declined. I'm not usually one to buy any extended coverage on anything. I'm in the camp of those who believe if a product is defective it will almost always become apparent within the factory warranty period. So for that reason I decline at the time of purchase.

However, I was having some 2nd thoughts and looked up this thread to see what others were doing... I did check out the Ziegler website, and ran a scenario on a '14 GC with 35k miles. And the price was about the same as the quote for a brand new '16 for Lifetime coverage. Now why would I pay NOW for Lifetime coverage when I already have bumper to bumper for 3 yrs/36K miles? And then I have powertrain coverage for 5 yrs / 75K miles from the factory.

Generally speaking, the longest I've ever owned a car is 5 years. Ziegler offers plans up to 48 mos. after purchase, so I think the smart money is to wait at least until the 3 yr / 36K bumper to bumper is coming to an end. You can generally tell how a vehicle is holding up in 3 years of ownership.

If I've had problems, I'm going to be unloading that puppy before I'm thinking about paying for extended warranty, however if I feel that I will be keeping the vehicle for a long time, then buying warranty coverage at a later date is still an option, and probably cheaper to boot. My $.02

My 2014 Grand Cherokee Ltd after one year and 15K has been absolutely trouble free , but $1895 is well worth the piece of mind and at resale, it is transferable . (A great selling point).

Replying to BLKfenders regarding my 2014 GC/Ltd & Ziegler warranties.
A) FYI, to date, I've had absolutely no problems w/ my GC. It has exceeded my expectations in design/performance and reliability (my previous vehicle was an excellent Acura MDX).
B) regarding my Ziegler warranty, I have no regrets excepting that I wish I had paid extra for the lifetime warranty, as I plan on pampering this vehicle and keeping it as long as possible.
Good luck to all.

It's the trend plus that what the rest of the CDJR fleet is. BTW, Diesels are still 5/100.

I'm glad to hear you have had no issues with your GC. I just had mine delivered this afternoon, and my initial impression is exceeding expectations (You would hope so, it is a $50K vehicle after all... lol)
I'm coming from a '13 Jeep Wrangler JKU, and I drove it for 3.5 yrs and 49K miles with out one single issue. And like you, prior to it owned an Acura MDX. 0 defects in 5yrs 100K with the Acura.

Dealer told me 5/75K obviously I need to check it out. Once again, my point is if I'm at the point where my factory coverage is running out AND I know that I'm going to keep it, I can always buy the coverage.

@ jdurkin837, I'm sure you could still upgrade to the Lifetime, but 7yrs / 100K is a long time to own a car. And I feel that in that time you're going to see whether or not you need or want to cover beyond that point. Right now, you feel as if you're going to keep it a long long time, but things change. No point in overpaying for coverage that you may not use. I know people like to think that the transferable warranty adds resale, but probably not much.

The rental/loaner feature is one advantage to getting the MaxCare service contract (not a "warranty") sooner, rather than later since it's effective during the OEM warranty period, too, and as long as you buy it before 12k miles/12mos, you will not pay the slightly higher price.

Whether or not the contract is good for you depends on many things, including your personal preferences, how long you intend to keep the vehicle and how many miles you put on each year. For me, it was a no-brainer, since I was out of my OEM warranty in just less than two years due to mileage and plan on keeping the vehicle for 5-7 years. It's already paid for itself so I'm ahead of the game. There's a lot of very expensive tech involved here. For folks who don't pile on the miles and do not intend to keep the vehicle beyond the OEM warranty period or not much longer, it's less of a consideration, IMHO.

Re: Warranty info

Regarding various thoughts pro & con concerning extended warranties, the logic all makes sense.
If your GC has broken in with minimal problems and you plan on keeping it long term, invest in extended warranties. If however, you're going to turnover the GC within the standard warranty, it makes sense to not get an extended warranty, (read service contract).
Happy trails to all!
