Weak A/C 2014 Grand Cherokee

Just wanted to pass on some info concerning my GCs A/C performance. I have had my 2014 GC about 2 and a half years now and I have always thought the air conditioning seemed weak(blows fine just not as cold as it should be), it eventually cools but doesn't cool well especially when the temps get really high. I always figured that was just how it was and was just a bit of a marginal ac system. After a 90+ day and someone in my car commenting on the mildly cool air without my prompting, I took it in to the dealer
What the dealer found was an under charged A/C system. They evacuated and recharged it with the proper amount and it feels more like an ac should now. I probably should have taken it in long ago for this but I was trying not to be overly particular as the GC had been in for a number of other things. As it has always been this way and never gotten worse in 2.5 years I suspect it was just under filled at the factory vs a leak. So if anyone else notices an AC system in their 2014-2015 GC that is not performing up to the way you expect, it that may not be just the way it is and may be worth a trip to the dealer for a recharge if it were under filled like mine. Mine was a 2014 GC March 2013 build. There was no cost for this and I assume the dealer covered it under the 3/36.

Re: Weak A/C 2014 Grand Cherokee

I had the same problem since new on my 2014 Summit. I had the dealer check it last year and they said it had 1 oz. to much refrigerant. They put in the correct amount and to this day, I still haven't really noticed that its any better. I miss my 2012 GC Overland which had great A/C.

They billed the warranty for 2 lbs of 134a on my sales ticket, but I doubt my AC would have been working at all if it were really 32 oz low lol so I'm not really sure how low mine really was. I can feel an improvement but the test will be a 90+ degree day that is where it was really lacking compared to previous cars.

Re: Weak A/C 2014 Grand Cherokee

My late July13 built 14 has had A/c problems since new, with every update thrown at it to resolve it's issues. Finally after 18 months of complaints to the dealership they replaced the Sun and Cabin Sensors, so at least now the system seems to control what is selected on most occasions. Still has excessive cabin temp rises but only for short periods. My vehicle also has never had fantastic cooling ability. Have a temperature sensor mounted in the centre vents and the best it can pull the outlet temperature down to is 10deg C (50deg F) in high outside temps. I AGREE, with Jeeps changes from the previous model GC, THEY got the A/C WRONG!

I had the software fix done last year for the "hot cabin" issue where it cooked you in the winter time which fixed that issue. But I guess mine rolled off the assembly line with two hvac issues the software hot cabin issue and the under filled A/C system. I think all is fine now that the ac has been filled properly. Will see how it goes, somehow I still don't think this vehicle will produce 40 degree vent temps like in past vehicles but as long as its properly charged and working as designed that's all I can ask for.

Glad you got that fixed. There are things I should have done a while back but never bothered and I am sure it helps to remedy that (eg my steering wheel still orients to the 1 o clock position even in a straight line). My cabin is the opposite and can be quite cool where most passengers make a note on that- I set mine at 70 auto. When humidity is high; that is where I find most of the problems in many cars' AC systems. The temp might be lower but the humidity makes everything less bearable and the parts have to work much harder in a sluggish environment.

wow too cool I would have welcomed that this summer lol, once the hot cabin software issue that was unacceptable was fix this system has been pretty good except for the higher temp summer performance hopefully filling the system to spec will fix that. I had the steering wheel cocked to the right issue also. I took it to a private shop when I was having tires put on but they could not correct it. My dealer corrected it as they were used to dealing with it and knew what to do, it was apparently a little more tweaking then just performing a standard alignment. they charged me which I was not happy about same dealer that said on another issue the tech could not fix my car unless I allowed him to take it home with him over night 30 miles away, needless to say that is not my dealer anymore. I like my GC a lot but the dealer network needs a lot of improvement

Re: Weak A/C 2014 Grand Cherokee

My 2012 Overland had the worst AC of any vehicle I have ever owned. And it always smelled like a foot. But my 14 and 15 have been great thankfully

Thanks for the feedback. Will have the dealership check the refrigerant volume next service. Like most of the issues I have had with this vehicle the rectification time to sort them out has been frustrating. I have had no major issues with mine now for over 5 months, so reliability is comforting.

Re: Weak A/C 2014 Grand Cherokee

After driving around a few days after having them properly charge the ac system I can say it is definitely colder and cooling better than it ever has and the way I would expect now. So they apparently just under filled it at the factory when built. If yours has that marginally cool feel have the dealer recharge it don't assume that just because its new that that's just how it is.

Re: Weak A/C 2014 Grand Cherokee

Not to sound condescending but my 3/14 build Limited has GREAT air conditioning. My 08 Liberty limited, not so much. Point is the new system can work well but I don't use auto for a/c, just set temp to LO and control fan speed. I do use auto for heat and that works great as well. There is hope.
