Welp...RWD Grand Cherokee's are basically useless off road

So this weekend I parked in a wooded area along the road in northern california. The dirt underneath my tires was silty and crumbly and loosely packed. When I tried to get back on the road, the rear tires just DUG in and the jeep just sank into the ground. Anything I tried to do (turn traction ctrl off, keep it on) etc was useless as the left rear just spun like a top and would not grip. HOnestly, I didn't buy the truck to go off road but it's a freaking JEEP. You'd think that they'd give it SOME kind of diff to help it in dirty situations.

Stupid electronic gear selector also made it impossible to rock the jeep back and forth to get grip. So I had to dig my jeep out from a parking spot next to a paved road.

I wanted the high tow capacity but I'm really disappointed that I didn't get the 4x4 now

Serves well as a reminder to not trust the name, only the technology inside...and that up to a point.

If that's your lifestyle - trade it in. In fact Jeep should learn from Subaru...all cars AWD or more capable.

A limited slip differential can help off road, but it's by no means a 4WD replacement.

It's kinda hard to point the finger at Jeep because you chose a 2WD, non-limited slip equipped Jeep. Those features are available, and for whatever reason you chose not to purchase them.

This can be argued a billion times, but ultimately the reason I always buy 4WD models is for those times when I need it. Yes 4WD costs more, and there are higher maintenance costs, and slightly lower fuel economy, but I never regret when I'm off road, or on snow-covered dirt roads.

It is actually quite easy to point the finger. You're doing it to me.

Having said that, if the FWD mini that was parked behind me could pull out of the same mire, then the JEEP should be able to do the same, standard.

Maybe the Mini had a better driver behind the wheel.

Read this and your sig in quick conjunction.

Honestly not sure why the 2x4 model is RWD. Wouldn't FWD make more sense for a SUV if it wasn't 4/AWD?

Not necessarily. There are weight/balance considerations that make RWD attractive.

That said, I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone would get a 2WD Jeep. That would be like getting a slow Porsche or a minivan with seating for 4 and little cargo room. The Jeep exists for those of us interested in a car that has fantastic 4WD. If I didn't care about that there are a bunch of cars I'd get instead. The 2WD model is the worst of all worlds - you still have the weight of the Jeep, the cost of the Jeep, Jeep's reliability and service (or lack thereof), crappy fuel economy, for what possible payoff? It isn't any better off the road or in deep snow than a normal sedan. In fact, the high center of gravity can be a liability (and the ground clearance isn't helpful since with 2WD you won't get over any obstacles anyway). At that point just get a sedan.

Umm, did the mini bury their tires before stopping to think about whether or not their
driving tactics were a good idea?

Burying any vehicles tires tends to indicate a sort of lack of paying attention.

Why would you assume that? The thing that makes the Jeep competent on rough terrain is the 4WD system. Without that, why would you expect anything? This is like saying "look, he came from a GREAT boxing family, who cares if he was born without arms, he should be a FANTASTIC fighter!"
