Re: What am I missing...

It's purely for looks, you like it or you don't. Though that part of the wheel also heats up quickest in winter, so then it's a GOOD thing!

If you like the interior of the LTD, it's a much better "bargain" than the Overland. You're buying a lot of fluff in the overland (leather dash, variety of interiors, body colored wheel arches, etc) for the extra $2500ish that it costs. Except for the folding mirrors, there's little FUNCTIONAL difference between an Overland and a loaded LTD.

So what are you missing? Nothing that I can see. You have an opinion like all the rest of us.

My last 4 vehicles have had black leather wrapped steering wheels, and when parked windows closed in the hot Summer sun, the wheel would get hot as hell.

I find that my bare hand actually gets a better grip on the wood portion of my Overland's steering wheel compared to the more slippery leather portion. Of course this could be because the skin on my right hand is very soft & supple due to the generous amounts of assorted lotions & hand creams I use when viewing internet porn.

My black leather wheel gets warm in the summer sun, but not HOT as the one was yesterday.

As far as your second paragraph is concerned... TMI...! You do not live far from me, so now if we ever meet I need to remember not to shake your right hand.

We could "Fist Bump" instead of shaking hands...but you might not like where my fist has been either.

Re: What am I missing...

As others have said, its all a matter of taste. I've had wood/leather wheels on my Lexus sedans for years so I am used to them and like them. They do get hot in the sun. I do know however a lot of people don't like them. Its good you have options.

Heck, you could also drop 2-3 tenths of a second off 0-60 if you'd wear driving gloves. Make it 4 tenths if you get the old fashioned ones with the lace up backing instead of those wimpy Velcro fasteners.

The old sports car drivers wore driving gloves because the wheels were slippery. Then good aftermarket leather wraps became available and killed that excuse, leaving only the "because they look kewl with the natty looking hat" one behind.

I do notice the wood section is a tad warmer on hot days than the leather section. But if your hands are there, your hands are in the wrong driving position to be wearing driving gloves anyway...

Maybe they'd get more creative if Toyota started selling a base-model Camry with tons of wood trim.
Eggshually is carbon fiber nowadays it seems. Not necessarily the most photogenic or comfortable carbon fiber either.

I say bring back engine turned metal!!!

Re: What am I missing...

And as far as vinyl is concerned, you should feel Lexus' "NuLuxe". Feels very similar to leather.

Re: What am I missing...

I think the really nice high-grade vinyls are often simply labeled as leather interiors, with a footnote describing what they really are. Some time ago when I looked in to the subject it looked like some of the higher-end synthetics were very nice while requiring less ongoing care and maintenance than animal-hide leather.

It feels like I usually see carbon fiber offered on high-performance cars. I didn't pay much attention, but I got the impression that it was wood for general luxury models and carbon fiber specifically for performance-oriented models.

It might be interesting to try steering wheels covered with the same materials they're using on some higher-end smartphones and tablets now to make them comfortable in the hand without being slick enough to drop.

I think Chrysler should bring back wicker seats to match the wood trim.

Ummmm.....that's planned AFTER the Wagooner is re-introduced with the "unique wood-grain side panels" in a few years.

Re: What am I missing...

Automotive leather is not really leather anyway. It's more like particle board with polyurethane on top. "Real" analine leather is too expensive to be in plebeian cars like Jeeps.

To the subject at hand (yuk yuk) I immediately noticed that the wood portion of the Overland steering wheels gets noticeably hotter in the sun than the all-leather varieties. I've had cars with black leather wrapped wheels for the past 10 years so I'm familiar with how they feel in pretty much any conditions. I've toyed with the idea of replacing my wheel with an all-leather one from a Limited. The wheels are on eBay for $180 used or $350 new.
