What are you towing?

The wife and I are considering a travel trailer and I was just wondering what you guys are pulling behind your GC's. Post up a pic of your trailer and let's see what you guys are towing!

Re: What are you towing?

We tow an Airstream "Bambi". Jeep GC's make very good tow vehicles. We have towed with a 2007 WK and a 2012 WK2 (both with V8's) in six western states (CA, OR, WA, NV, UT, AZ). Some new options for the WK2 make it an even better tow vehicle than the WK: 6-speed trans, QuaraLift suspension, and low-profile tires. Just stay within the manufactures specs and use a brake controller and a weight distribution hitch with sway control.

Have fun with your search for a travel trailer.

Do you still need a weight distribution hitch with the Quadra-lift, just picked up my 2012 GC diesel and will be towing a 2.5 tonne caravan with it????

Re: What are you towing?

Dasher, not sure about the WK2 Diesel, but the WK2 owners manual for the gas versions with tow packages states "Load equalizing hitch recommended for trailers over 2,000 pounds." Also, all my previous research on this subject indicates that air suspension systems can be misleading when it comes to towing trailers because they disquise the fact that weight is still shifted off the front wheels to the rear, which reduces handling and stability. There are many factors (towing experience, distance, speed, etc.), but the larger the trailer, the greater the risk. I know WD systems are complicated and bulky (mine is). As a result, a new light weight WD hitch made by Andersen Hitch, may be worth considering. ~ Ken

Not sure where you get the 2000 lb recommendation from...this is a warning I see in the US manual I have:

Quote:
WARNING: If the gross trailer weight is 3,500 lbs (1 587 kg) or more, it is mandatory to use a weight-distributing hitch to ensure stable handling of your vehicle. If you use a standard weight-carrying hitch, you could lose control of your vehicle and cause a collision.
I'm guessing that a weight-distribution hitch would help but I tow a pop-up that weighs around 2100-2200 lb loaded and I just have a regular hitch.

Haha...an old one at that. 2001 we just picked up a couple months ago. Love it so far for wakeboarding and surfing.

Re: What are you towing?

We tow a 17'6' off road caravan here in Australia with our diesel - weighs around 4800lbs loaded to go.
More than happy with the available power and no issues after 8000 miles towing, with an average fuel of 18.4 US mpg when the van has been connected.
Jeep Australia have issued a bulletin stating that a WDH should be used on all available suspensions when towing an ATM over 5000lbs (2268kg).
