Actually the main reason is that Nitrogen is less likely to migrate through tire rubber than air that is only approx. 75% Nitrogen. This means that tires filled with pure Nitrogen will hold pressure more consistently. This is very important in race cars, where the slightest change could effect a race cars handling.
In aircraft, as well as auto, tires that are purged with Nitrogen are also more moisture free. Several of the air compressor systems used in service stations and dealerships have a great deal of water in the system. Especially in warm, humid climates. Nitrogen is an inherent dehydrator. When your tires are purged with Nitrogen, they are filled and drained several times in order to remove all of the air. This also helps remove any moisture as well. Any tire filled with moist air will vary in pressure far more as the temperature of the tire increases or decreases. The less pressure variation a tire goes through as it warms up or cools down, the better. Nitrogen helps insure this.
