It always depends on the initial attitude of the driver.

I was doing 75 in a 55 on the LIE. A cop passed in the HOV and the guy in front of me jammed on his brakes. I hit my brakes and started flashing my lights as the guy behind was getting close. A couple of minutes later the cop pulls me over and started talking aggressive driving. I didn't say anything. He came back with a ticket for improper use of headlights. He said since I had a clean record he went light.

He then asked, didn't you see me? I said yes I did, and so did the guy in front of me. He jammed on his brakes. I told the cop that while he saw my headlights, he didn't see the brake lights and the pile up that could have happened.

He thought about that for a minute and came to a decision. He said he already wrote the ticket, but since he would not be able to make the court date I could beat it. When I asked when the court date was, he didn't know, but knew he couldn't make it.

We had a short conversation and went on our way. He was never concerned about the 75 in a 55.

I'm confused. I understand how flashing your brake lights might conceivably be helpful in that situation, but I don't get the headlights part.

I was letting the guy in front know that he was about to get rear ended. He got the message and hit the gas. Unless things have changed in the last ten years, when driving on the Long Island Expressway at any speed you never leave more than three car lengths. If you do, someone slips in there and you only have one car length. When someone does something stupid going from 75 to 55 because he thinks the cop didn't see him, accidents happen.

Yeah I was on the LI Expy once years ago and it scared the crap out of me. I remember vividly it looked like everybody on there had already had at least one accident in what they were driving and didn't care if they had another.

Re: What did you do to your WK2 today?

Wow! 3 car lengths going 75mph/120kmh doesn't leave a lot of reaction time. A car at full brake lock can take as little as 120-150ft to stop. That rear bumper would be coming at you fast. You'd have 1-2seconds to avoid the collision.

Guess that's why cars are coming with collision avoidance systems now.

Re: What did you do to your WK2 today?

Tony, it's sadly all too common for idjuts to pull between vehicles that are more than a couple vehicle lengths apart in heavy traffic, even at high speed. I'm really surprised there are not even more accidents because as you point out, the reaction time is so short.

I regularly travel to and from the DC area and have to have my ACC set to "!" (shortest following distance and even then someone will pull in every few minutes or weave between the lanes outside and inside of me on I95. It's maddening! And I do appreciate that the ACC sensor can react faster than I can for sure...

Re: What did you do to your WK2 today?

The fools around here will lane change in front of you with barely 2 car lengths between you and the guy in front of you. If you're lucky you'll get a blink or two of a turn signal after they've already started their lane change... that is, if they don't have a damn cell phone glued to their ear.

Wash and waxed before putting on the Yakima Streamline bars. Kinda sucks that Yakima does not have a kit to attach to the factory flush rails. Once they do, I'm switching these out. Also went to eat fresh oysters at a shellfish farm.

I have mine set at 10 over - a threshold where I should probably make sure I don't go any faster. The sentence is a bit annoying (especially where the map's limit isn't synced with the actual speed limit), but better than a ticket.
