What Do I Do Now? Opinions Requested

I have been in discussions with 2 local dealers on a 2015 Summit and was getting within a day or two of pulling the trigger. My goal was to get the best price on the new vehicle and a good trade-in number on my 08 Overland. Then on Sunday my wife takes the Overland to the grocery store and while there someone backs into the Jeep, causing damage to the driver side fender (as you might expect no note or anything). Anyway, I take the Overland to a body shop yesterday afternoon and it will cost about $650 to repair (I have a $1000 deductible so the cost comes out of my pocket). The rub is that they can't get to it for 4 weeks. So what do I do now? Do I trade it anyway with the damage and for a lower amount? If I do that should I expect that the reduction in value will be more than the cost to repair? Will they even take it damaged? Or, do I hold off on the new Summit for a month or so until I have the Overland repaired? Any advice?

You should talk this all over with the dealers you are working with, and see what they can do for you. It certainly will cost them less to fix the damage as they have their own body shops, or work closely with one. I'm sure they've run into this problem before.

Yes, speak with the dealers as their internal repair cost isn't what you would pay retail. You may lose a little on trade, but you also don't have to deal with the issue, either. Stuff happens...they know that...

See what they value the trad-in value at... If it's more than $600 then wait or make a decision. If it's less, then you don't have to worry about it!

Is there only one body shop? $650 is only a day or two in the shop.

I'd even ask the dealers for recommends for body shops and whether it is worth you fixing it.

A dealer with their own body shop might ding you less on value than one that has to send it out but their costs are way less than yours would be.

Unfortunately, some dealers would not want the bother since it means they couldn't turn it around and sell it right away. But if you want a dealer that would be trying to be good to you, this would be a really good test.

Two years ago, I traded in a Lexus with a check engine light and an obviously unstable idle. The dealer deducted money from their trade in valuation for the engine trouble, but it was less than the repair estimate I got from the Lexus dealer. In my case, trading in the car damaged was cheaper and easier than reparing it first. Best of luck to you.
