What does snow mode do?

Didnt think it would snow this winter due to the fact that I bought a Jeep. Looks like I might be wrong this weekend.

I was just wondering what does snow mode do and when to turn it on? 2 inches of snow? 8 inches of snow? When do you enable it?

Re: What does snow mode do?

Use it when the road is snow covered. It adjusts shift points. Starts you out in 2nd gear. It's in the owners manual.

Answer may depend on your model year.
It turns off any move down to aero height.

Also turns off ECO mode--where I can't imagine why on current models where MDS changes are unnoticeable.

Allegedly it also calms down shifting a bit, although you can still do a pretty good donut with it on.

I don't go by inches, just slipperiness. As the snow gets too deep, I tend to go to
OR-1 as it cuts down on drag a bit if the snow is deep enough to hit the underbody.

On or off, you will not notice a huge difference.

Re: What does snow mode do?

I believe torque split is 50/50 f/r, starts in 2nd, feathers out the shift points and ups the stability control threshold. Useful in heavy rain as well.

Sand mode lets you have lots of tail happy drifting fun in the snow hehe as stability control is turned off.

That's odd, maybe mine is messed up. 15 overland and around 40mph in snow mode, the registered mpg stays around 10 and the rpm goes up around 1800. I think it holds in higher gear ? I just switch back to auto and it handles snow well with better mpg

Re: What does snow mode do?

From Selec-Terrain Overview in manual:

Auto setting: 40/60 torque split (front/rear), normal ride height, normal stability control.

Snow setting: 50/50 torque split, normal ride height, normal stability control.

Sand/Mud setting: 50/50 torque split, Off Road 1 (OR1) ride height, no stability control.

BTW, after selecting Selec-Terrain, you can override the height setting with the QL up/down buttons.

.

That might be true but aside from the difference in torque split, I can also feel a difference in traction control management when I dial in snow mode.

I turn snow mode on when I start cutting with the tires thru snow.

I've noticed a big difference on our unplowed winter road - the second gear start and non-aggressive shifts make it a lot smoother going through the snow.

Well, in my case it might be because I run snowflake/mountain symbol tires. Don't get me wrong, I do use Snow mode, but also plow through snow just fine in Auto.
