What does WK2 mean?

I'm new here. Hopefully this isn't too stupid a question: What does WK2 mean?

Re: What does WK2 mean?

It's a model designation. Wikipedia has them all listed, going back to the beginning in 1941.

Re: What does WK2 mean?

I think the question is - what are the origins of this designation? Is it just a random conglomeration of letters, or does it have a root in something else, a phrase, or a pattern, etc.

Re: What does WK2 mean?

I don't think CJF uses WK2 - GCs are just "family code" WK - the "2" is something that was added by the forum to seperate the 2011-2013s. Suppose the '14 should be WK3.

Re: What does WK2 mean?

Interesting that Wikipedia lists WK as ending in 2010, instead of 'present' but doesn't list anything else.

WK

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't it originate from the CJ/"civilian jeep" designation?

Re: What does WK2 mean?

From Wikipedia....

Grand Cherokee (2005-2010)
Using the WJ and KJ as a springboard, the most recent WK Grand Cherokee has a greater blend of car-like ride and handling with traditional offroad capability. Grand Cherokee has been completely redone for 2011.

So the WK is just random letters with no meaning behind them?

Some had a meaning like that, but I doubt they all did.

CJ - civilian jeep
DJ - dispatch jeep
XJ - eXperimental jeep
Fj - fleet van jeep (not to be confused with the toyota FJ)
FC - forward control

Some thiought SJ may have meant station wagon jeep (think original wagoneers).

Also re: the whole WK / WK2 thing. Jeep has used the same family code for different vehicles in the past as well. Namely the SJ which included the fullsize Wagoneers and Cherokees as well as the Fullsize pickup family (J10, J20, Gladiator, etc)

Using the WJ and KJ as a springboard,
I would guess it is a combination of the WJ and KJ that brought on WK?

Edit: Alternatively, the K in WK may just be an increment in the J on the older models. Like a "next gen" sort of deal. This would make sense with all the current models being _K

The vehicle family codes represent 1 generation of a vehicle, so the "WK2" would be for the 2011-2016 model years.

Typically, codes have changed/progressed for each new vehicle generation. This stopped for awhile when Cerberus decided not to progress the codes on a number of vehicles. They retained "WK" for the new 2011-2016 Grand Cherokee, and continued "LX" for the Chrysler 300. The reason was, they thought it would help to "hide" future vehicle information from suppliers that they were sending proposals to. Instead, it resulted in a lot of confusion for suppliers, dealers, owners, and within the company. All future codes will now be progressed.

Some current code examples:

JC - Journey
JK - Wrangler
LC - Challenger
LD - Charger
MK - Compass/Patriot
WD - Durango

Extended codes

The 2-digit codes are actually the first two digits of an extended 6-digit code, which identifies additional information about the vehicle. For example:

WKTS74 = Overland 2WD
WKJS74 = Overland 4WD

1st and 2nd digits:

"WK" = Vehicle family

3rd digit:

"T" = 2WD
"J" = 4WD

4th digit:

"S" = series/price class ("S" = Overland, "H"= Laredo, "X" = SRT etc.)

5th and 6th digits:

"74" = 4 door SUV

Here are the codes for the 2014 Grand Cherokee:

WKTH74 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x2
WKTP74 Grand Cherokee Limited 4x2
WKTS74 Grand Cherokee Overland 4x2
WKTT74 Grand Cherokee Summit 4x2

WKJH74 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4
WKJP74 Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4
WKJS74 Grand Cherokee Overland 4x4
WKJT74 Grand Cherokee Summit 4x4
WKJX74 Grand Cherokee SRT8 4x4

WKBH74 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x2 (RHD)
WKUH74 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 (RHD)
WKUP74 Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 (RHD)
WKUS74 Grand Cherokee Overland 4x4 (RHD)
WKUX74 Grand Cherokee SRT8 4x4 (RHD)
