We had a Sienna Minivan a while back when Chrysler did not offer an AWD version. Consumer Reports loved it, and it was a mess. Numerous major problems that were very common on the forums and known that Toyota never would cowboy up to or admit existed.

As soon as I see how much they like Toyota I "flip the off switch". They quantify vehicles the same way they review toasters and dishwashers. Yes, cars will get you to work and home, and some get better mileage and have lower repair bills. Those same cars make me want to swallow a shotgun if I have to drive them for more than 5 minutes. Some of us that spend almost 3 hours a day in our car want something that doesn't feel like I'm driving a huge turd down the road. No thank you CR (and Toyota)...

Re: What Happened to Consumer Reports Safety Complaint?

Whatever CR complaints may have been over the WK2, were immediately squelched by their Toyota CYA and smothered by 70k+ unit sales for the 2011 JGC.

CR was the standard bearer for product reviews for our grandparents.

Jeebus.

Our copy must be stuck in the snow between Jersey and here. Will check it out, but did they say it was better for safety reasons, or something else such as acceleration?

For sure they haven't yet said squat online about any HEMI test results, which is where they initially reported the skid-pad issue. Best guess is that they had problems with the 18" hooves, and no problem with the 20's. If so, that's more a tire issue than a vehicle issue, even if Jeep did pick those tires.

[LATER...] Turns out CR was in my wife's mail pile this afternoon. Their "new" report isn't anything new at all, just taking their earlier GC material and comparing it to the 4Runner. They prefer the Jeep, which isn't saying much: Out of 14 midsized SUVs, they recommend fully 10 but not the V6 GC (score 66), which they rank as #12. Number one is the Kia Sorento (score 82). The 4Runner is dead last at #14 (score 55).

Go figure, but they continue to give the GC's emergency handling a black circle, their lowest rating, and their tests show wet braking to be long at 157' (from 60). After lo these many months they're still testing a GC HEMI, so presumably we'll have to wait awhile longer [silent night, crickets chirping] to see if that does better in their estimate.

I've driven nearly half their recommended SUVs, and respectfully think their brains must work very differently from mine. They appear to be rating SUVs strictly as mommymobiles for the local mall, preferably when it's not snowing, but true SUVs are meant to be different from, and more versatile than, minivans.

Somebody said earlier that they rate cars like refrigerators. Good point. If you want a great refrigerator, be sure to spring for a glossy white Kia Sorento.

Shucks, I only buy it for the ... uh,...

(pause to reconsider culturally-correct reflexive response)

... I buy it for the college FB all-american team and auto reviews too...!

Re: What Happened to Consumer Reports Safety Complaint?

CR reminds me of the report I saw on the news one evening about the Better Business Bureau. You know how the BBB is or was always supposed to be the go to source for researching a business' credibility, rating, or to file complaints if there are issues - well there was a big story not too long ago on the BBB pinching businesses for $$$ or they received D or F ratings.

It was a whole undercover investigation where they caught BBB agents basically trying to milk businesses and telling them for a certain membership fee their rating will be improved.

Investigators got a business who initially refused to pay (and received an F) to agree to the fee and watched their rating turn into an A+.

You really can't trust the BBB anymore - nor is CR a reputable source for reviews.
Everything is a scam and is all about who pays who more to get their name in lights.

This is where I'd much rather trust fellow jeepers for example or sites like amazon for my shopping where I can read actual reviews and experiences by folks who own or use the product.

Re: What Happened to Consumer Reports Safety Complaint?

Just read the new CR issue with the test of the V8. They said it did not have any of the hopping problems of the V6 on their avoidance maneuver....

Still waiting for my copy.

18 or 20 inch wheels? I can't help but think it's the hooves, not the engine, making the difference.

Re: What Happened to Consumer Reports Safety Complaint?

Hard copy still not in, but the revised CR tests are now online. They tested a Limited HEMI with 18" Latitudes (same rubber as on their V6 tester) and said its emergency handling was just fine, giving it an average instead of the V6's goose egg.

Yet, in the summary they mention the poor emergency handling as a "low," as though it applies to all GCs, even though they now know this only applies to the V6. This is, at best, sloppy editing.

They didn't bother with an analysis, but they show the V8 as 1/2" lower than the V6, so that and the extra weight must have done the trick. Slightly shorter stops, too, which is really odd given the HEMI's greater weight.

However, CR's several reader comments were all five stars and full of raves, and some took CR to task for their official analysis of the GC -- one even suggesting it might be outright prejudice against Jeep.

With all that, though, CR didn't change its overall mediocre numerical rating of the GC from 66, which was that low in part because of the V6's alleged poor emergency handling that isn't present on the V8. Go figure, because you'd think the HEMI would have a higher rating than the Pentastar because of its better handling, acceleration and braking.
