CR is useless for auto reviews IMHO and I've been reading CR a long time. In the case of the Hemi stopping shorter, I would attribute that to the heavy duty brakes that come with Hemi-equipped WK2s.

First off I think the CR report is bogus. Also, I'm confused by the statement above - I thought the overland and limited V6 & V8 have exactly the same brakes. According to the specs in the comparison below they both have 12.9" vented discs in the front and 12.6" discs in the back.

http://www.trucktrend.com/roadtests/...son/index.html

Additionally this comparo shows the V6 actually stops 10 ft shorter than the V8 (128ft vs 138ft in 60-0) - my guess is due to the reduced vehicle weight.

***Note Car & Driver report the Laredo V6 4x4 & Overland V8 4x4 have the same brakes & same stopping time 70-0

Re: What Happened to Consumer Reports Safety Complaint?

CR's figures (V6/V8, 18" Latitudes):
Braking from 60 mph dry, ft. 139 138
Braking from 60 mph wet, ft. 157 150
Emergency handling
Avoidance maneuver, max speed 48.5 49.0
0 to 30 mph, sec. 3.7 3.0
0 to 60 mph, sec. 9.1 7.9
45 to 65 mph, sec. 6.2 5.1

Re: What Happened to Consumer Reports Safety Complaint?

I bet this TSB has fixed their minor complaint.

Re: What Happened to Consumer Reports Safety Complaint?

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves flash reprogramming the Electronic Stability Control Module (ESC)
with new software.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Some customers may prefer more sensitivity during ESC events.

Good find, you're almost certainly right.

This alternate TSB would have also resolved CR's not recommended rating:

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves removing all Jeep branding and replacing with labels and badges from VW or Toyota.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Some consumer review magazines may have an irrational aversion to anything labeled Jeep.

If they have the same brakes, then I stand corrected. When I was shopping, the V6 versions did not indicate HD brakes on the window sticker while the Hemi -optioned versions indicated HD brakes on the sticker with the additional amount for the Hemi option; this inferred that the Hemi versions had heavier-duty brakes while the V6s did not. Perhaps the brakes are the truly same and there are/were inconsistencies in the window sticker verbiage?

They don't have the same brakes. Part numbers and prices on HD rotors and pads are different.

Re: What Happened to Consumer Reports Safety Complaint?

My guess on the brakes is that the HD brakes come with the HD towing package, which was NOT originally included with V8 Overlands, but IS standard now.

Their test/publication lead time is months, not days, and the TSB is for production through to the end of last December. No way was there time for this upgrade to apply to their latest test vehicle.
