What is the plastic engine cover for?

My old ZJ didn't have no stinkin' cover.

What is it for? Doesn't it impede the cooling?

Re: What is the plastic engine cover for?

Supposed to tidy up the engine bay, and claim to cut down on noise transmission.

IMO it was an excuse to get away from the lost art of making the engine look kick arse with the painted blocks, alum lines, billet bits, and chrome.

It's a styling exercise. I can't remember when it first started, nor by whom, but there are stylists that just do underhood work now. The SRT8s don't have covers, so feel free to remove it.

Re: What is the plastic engine cover for?

I think the german manufacturers started this in the mid 90s. Looked more high tech to see this solid lump sitting there than all the greasy bits. Doesn't really bother me as there are tons of other items in cars these days that serve a limited purpose at best.
