Re: What other SUV brands did you consider?

I would love to read a thread asking the same question of those who ultimately chose other brands to see what their reasons for excluding the GC ended up being. It's easy to read a thread about people that made the same choice as us; would be interesting to get an outside perspective from folks who made a different (wrong of course!) decision! )

I agree with you about the new one, but previous Explorers have always been pretty true SUVs.

The other problem with the new Explorer is it is EXPENSIVE. In order to get the equipment we wanted on the Explorer we would have had to spend $10K more in MSRP than the Jeep we bought, and when you factor in the incredible deal we got on the Jeep, and that you might be lucky to get $1,500 off of an Explorer the difference in cost was more like $15k.

I mean...you can buy an Overland Summit with every option and its still cheaper than a loaded Explorer Limited (they can be $55k), and have WAY more style and capability. $55k puts you into a Mercedes, Land Rover LR4, a new X5, all of which are way more vehicle than an Explorer.

Agreed...we briefly peeked in an Audi Q7 and VW Touareg, but we couldn't get past the prices to equip them how we wanted. The WK2 was a no brainer.

I agree, I actually have not bought a WK2 yet. I will need to replace my aging 04 Overland sometime next year and I am of course leaning toward staying with Jeep.

But I am also open to other possibilities, my main other consideration is the Nissan Pathfinder due to the fact that is the only other small to midsized SUV that I have seen that has an available V/8 engine and a fold flat cargo area.

Of course I also need something that is comfortable to drive for long days behind the wheel for my work. I have not test driven either one yet.

I hope I do not make the wrong choice.

very true about the new Explorers, it reminds me of the new SAAB SUV also, as you mention the Fords are expensive!

Re: What other SUV brands did you consider?

I currently own 3 jeeps and I will always own at least one jeep. I will however have to get rid of liberty to get a larger family SUV soon, I will consider the Durango and Thaoe/Yukon. I like to buy American cars.

Re: What other SUV brands did you consider?

The Jeep GC was the first vehicle we test drove...but we then checked out the following:
Nissan Pathfinder - OK but a bit long and narrow, not as refined as hoped.
Nissan XTerra - Actually a bit fun to drive (in a truck kind of way) but not refined at all. Old electronics.
Mazda CX-9 - OK but not as quick as expected, towing capabilities questionable.
Toyota Highlander - Nice ride but we were coming from a 2001 Highlander and this wasn't really much of a difference.
Toyota 4Runner - Could not get out of this quickly enough. Rode like a truck, acceleration wasn't good, and the brakes were terrible.
Honda Pilot - Thought it was OK but seemed a bit big. The DW didn't like it.
Ford Explorer - Nice but too big for us.

Re: What other SUV brands did you consider?

The Caddy SRX isn't bad either although I wouldn't buy one yet. Once the CUE-system is installed and working properly, it will be a strong contender - that is if you don't need a V8.

Re: What other SUV brands did you consider?

We were looking at a luxury SUV we could use everyday but would tow and be good for ski trips, etc. We considered X5, Mercedes GL, Porsche Cayenne, Infiniti QX56, Land Rover, and decided on the Overland Summit. We didn't need the larger size or 4x4 or towing because we kept the Armada and got rid of a Corolla. My only requirement was the Hemi, hers was the Nappa Leather.

Re: What other SUV brands did you consider?

My order and money not being a consideration;

BMW X5 5.0i or 3.5d
Audi Q7 3.0T S-Line
VW Touareg TDI

While I purchased an Overland w/ Hemi, I would prefer one of the above vehicles for overall on-road performance. I'll give the edge to the Jeep for the 4WD system (QDII) but steering, braking and acceleration are behind the others. The Jeep was the best value but I do miss the performance for my previous vehicles (Q7 and 335i). Granted, the 335i is not in the same vehicle class and therefore is not a fair to compare the two. However the powertrain is intoxicating with ample power, acceleration and fuel economy.

I looked at the Explorer (screamed minivan in SUV clothing to me), SRX (lack of usable cargo space) and MDX (reflections from trim and quantity of buttons) but ended up with the Jeep.

After 5 months and 8500 miles of ownership it has been reliable except for some minor issues (iPod connection and forward movement on start-up). I will be upgrading in the next year or two to either the SRT8 or brand X.

Regards,
NHman
